Step Rate: $27.20–$34.36/hour (SMEO) / $25.08–$28.21/hour (Laborer)

Essential Job Functions

• Perform skilled repair and maintenance of motor equipment; inspect and service vehicles and equipment and troubleshoot gasoline and diesel engines.
• Conduct tune‑ups, front‑end work such as alignments, remove and replace transmissions, disassemble and replace diesel and gasoline engines, and replace faulty work parts.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems in vehicles and equipment.
• Remove, repair, and adjust air and hydraulic systems on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment.
• Highly skilled in welding and fabrication.
• Perform minor auto body work and related metal‑working duties.
• Execute preventative maintenance of city‑owned equipment.
• Fill out work orders and order parts for assigned jobs.
• Operate hand and power tools, including shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches, and small power tools.
• Participate in snow and ice operations.
• Attend seminars and training programs to maintain required licenses or certifications and stay current with safety practices.
• Perform related duties as required.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Assistant Commissioner of Operations, Commissioner of Public Works, Foreman, or General Foreman.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• At least 5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic.
• Valid Class B MA CDL and Hoisting License 2B. Candidates may be given one year to obtain the required licenses.
• Must have own tools; specialty tools provided by the department.
• Must be available during snow and ice events.
• Strong manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and physical stamina necessary for outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skills

• Knowledge of repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions and adhere to safety precautions in an efficient, safe manner, often under adverse weather conditions.
• Fine motor skills required to operate department tools and equipment, including tractor‑trailer operation for safe transportation of materials and debris.

Physical Demands

• Frequent and extended periods of outdoor work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.
• Continuous walking, standing, climbing, and frequent periods requiring uncomfortable physical positions; may work on damp or uneven surfaces.
• Work that involves bending, crawling, kneeling, pulling, reaching, pushing, twisting, climbing ladders and sloping surfaces, grasping, dragging, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Mobility, vision, hearing, dexterity, and use of hands and legs appropriate to the duties performed.

Work Environment

• Employees perform work indoors and outdoors on a variety of motor equipment.
• Exposure to equipment/machinery, noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, grease, and risk of personal injury.
• Work continuously outdoors regardless of weather; may work beyond normal hours at nights and/or on weekends in response to emergencies on 24‑hour, 365‑day basis.

• Employees are responsible for avoiding consequences of errors, missed deadlines, or poor judgment, including waste of material, damage to buildings or equipment, and danger to public safety or personal injury.
