We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in evolving M&S's Customer Order Domain.

This team provides the critical software capabilities that capture, manage, and fulfil customer demand across every channel, powering digital experiences and business operations that serve millions of customers every year.

Your "customers" are product teams, engineers, and business stakeholders and your mission is to enable them through scalable services, robust APIs, event-driven architectures, and exceptional engineering practices.

This is a role for an engineer who is excited by building high-volume transactional systems, designing reusable platform capabilities, and shaping how customer orders are processed, fulfilled, and managed across one of the UK's largest retailers.

What You'll Do

Your key accountabilities will include

  • Design, build, and evolve backend services that support the complete customer order lifecycle, from order creation through to fulfilment and completion.
  • Develop scalable microservices and APIs using Java/Kotlin, enabling reliable and efficient order processing across multiple channels.
  • Contribute to event-driven architectures using Kafka to support high-volume transactional workflows across Payments, Pricing, and Fulfilment domains.
  • Design and evolve Graph QL and REST APIs, ensuring consistency, performance, scalability, and an excellent developer experience.
  • Build resilient, low-latency solutions using distributed databases, caching technologies, and modern architectural patterns.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Architects, and business stakeholders to solve complex commerce challenges.
