What you'll do
To lead a team of analysts in the development of high-quality Power BI reporting whilst owning the underlying M&S Online analyst data layer. This includes the transformation of Data Engineering supplied data and API-driven data ingestion to enable report creation. This position combines hands-on reporting and dashboard delivery with the technical ownership of a curated data layer, balancing insight delivery and robust analytics engineering. The role ensures M&S Online data is reliably shaped and modelled for consistent, trusted and actionable reporting insight that drive decisions on M&S's operational excellence and across the entirety of the Customer browse, purchase and return journey.
Domain-specific accountabilities for automation and reporting include M&S Online Operations, D&T Product Teams, Food Digital and Brands whilst also owning M&S Online Customer/Trade via the management of a highly skilled team.
Analytical Engineering
- Transform and curate Data Engineering supplied data into reporting-ready datasets.
- Maintain API-driven data ingestion pipelines into the analytical layer.
- Implement data validation and performance optimisation.
- Ensure consistency and governance in metrics.
Reporting
- Build and maintain Power BI dashboards for M&S Online.
- Develop semantic models, star schemas, and standardised KPIs.
- Translate business requirements into clear, actionable, and visually compelling reports.
- Drive self-service reporting adoption by providing reusable datasets and training/support.
- Maintain dashboard consistency, usability and performance.
- Support leadership and operational decision-making with timely, accurate reporting.
This is a highly technical role that requires extensive knowledge and application of Power BI (DAX, Power Query) but also analytical languages (SQL, PySpark, Python) to build all required pipelines. Aside from setting the general direction of development, this is an outward facing role in which collecting and interpreting requirements is key, as is playing back the final delivered products.
Develop and lead a team of analysts, driving a high-performance culture across the team. End-to-end delivery of reporting for M&S Online KPIs with a focus on Operational areas, Trade and Experimentation. Building roadmaps to set the direction of the team – identifying opportunities for new reporting products and enhancements. Strong stakeholder management – gather requirements and deliver to their requirements. Continuously evolving or delivering new insights to keep pace with changing demands. Drive improvements in automation, optimisation and general best practices. Actively develop relationships & collaboration between Digital & Tech and M&S Online teams. Always thinking customer and putting them at the centre of all that we deliver.
Who you are
- Proven team leadership and coaching experience.
- Proven experience working with huge quantities of customer data ideally within the retail industry or similar.
- Direction setting and stakeholder management.
- Advanced SQL, PySpark and Python to curate data.
- Exceptional Power BI.
- Able to multi-task and prioritise accordingly.
- Attention to detail and competent working under pressure.
