How We Hire
Everyone is welcome at M&S. No exceptions. It\’s your background, abilities and differences that make you, uniquely you. And when you\’re part of M&S, that individuality has the potential to make waves.
About the role
This section tells you all you need to know about the position and its responsibilities, outlining everything we hope to see in a successful candidate.
Summary
This role sits at the heart of shaping how M&S tells its product and brand stories. You\’ll lead the creation of a dynamic \’news desk\’ function—driving weekly buzz, crafting culturally resonant narratives, and embedding an editorial mindset across PR and Social Media. Acting as both storyteller and catalyst, you\’ll guide a shift in how teams think, talk, and write about our products, elevating consistency, quality, and impact
All the details
In this position, you will champion M&S\’s \’news desk\’ approach by leading product storytelling and composing weekly buzz moments in organic social and PR. You will build narratives grounded in newness, trends, brand values, and cultural insight. You\’ll promote a shift to a true brand-buzz culture by embedding an editorial perspective throughout the PR & Social Media team. This effort will elevate the way we develop and distribute content. Alongside this, you will guide product storytelling education across Marketing and wider Business Units, encouraging a cultural transformation in how we view, talk about, and present our products.
To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office at least three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.

- Discretionary bonus schemes
- Defined Contribution Pension Scheme and Life Assurance
- Tailored induction and training programmes
- Perks and discounts via our M&S Choices portal
- Industry-leading parental, adoption, and neonatal policies

What you will be doing
Responsible for the culture, delivery, and education of compelling product and brand storytelling while serving as the guardian of consistency across the PR, Social Media, and Celebrity Ambassador team:
- As part of the PR function, work alongside the Heads of PR & Social Media and the Transformation Manager. Develop a framework and deliver a schedule of engaging, relevant, and distinctive product and brand stories that generate earned buzz via PR & Social Media.
- Take full responsibility for the story—build, research, and invent product and brand stories that connect with trends, cultural and seasonal moments, and distinctive M&S brand platforms. Work closely with PR, Social Media, and Celebrity Ambassador teams to transform these into engaging and effective content and media outreach.
- Partner with PR, Social Media, and Celebrity Ambassador teams to mentor and motivate outstanding copywriting in all aspects—media pitches, captions, influencer briefs, event briefs, speaker notes, etc. Act as the custodian of compelling copy to promote clarity, consistency, and efficiency.
- Act like an \’investigative journalist\’ by developing a framework and structure. Use internal and external sources to develop cultural and trend stories that resonate, including customer data, social media trends, sales data, external trend data, and search data.
- In close partnership with Business Units (designers, buyers, merchandisers) and other business areas, identify and compose strong product and trend stories that are recognizably M&S. We want customers to feel our \’Love That\’ brand line in all communications. You will be accountable for this in PR & Social Media output, ensuring stories are captivating, substantiated, and offer clear reasons to \’Love That\’.
- Improve all content opportunities to drive value—build positive relationships with .com, CRM, Corporate & Colleague Comms etc to identify and improve broader opportunities for content
- Be responsible for the \’upskilling and inspiration\’ in how our brand and products are perceived. Guide a cultural shift in how we approach and communicate about our products.
What you will need
- Experience as a journalist or in previous marketing content roles
- Outstanding and passionate writer who always puts the audience/customer at the heart (delivering real stories and real product information for real people)
- A proven track record in leading cultural change and a supreme passion for fashion, home and beauty
- Excellent knowledge of guideline copy across a breadth of customer marketing channels
- Resilient, robust and able to work at pace, with a growth mindset and the flexibility to build and grow this new role during a time of transformation
- Structured and organised—able to build and embed new processes and make them stick
- A standout colleague who can connect across the business and externally, building trusted, expert relationships with other teams
- Outstanding attention to detail and a dedication to excellence
