Payroll Manager

Purpose of the Role
Lead and oversee payroll operations, ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time, and in compliance with legislation and company policies. Act as the key contact for payroll systems, reporting, and process improvement while managing and developing the payroll team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Lead, support, and develop the payroll team, monitoring workloads and performance.
  • Work closely with HR on starters, leavers, absences, pay changes, and employee data.
  • Maintain payroll policies, procedures, and system effectiveness.
  • Provide expert advice on payroll legislation, PAYE, pensions, statutory payments, and deductions.
  • Prepare payroll reconciliations, reporting, and analysis for senior management.
  • Drive continuous improvement across payroll systems, processes, and controls.
  • Liaise with employees, HMRC, auditors, and external stakeholders.
  • Support pension administration, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Promote health, safety, quality standards, and company values.

Person Specification

  • Previous experience managing or supervising a payroll team.
  • Strong payroll knowledge, including PAYE, NIC, statutory payments, pensions, benefits, and year-end processes.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced payroll environment.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong payroll systems knowledge.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and problem-solving.
