We’re looking for a strategic, commercially minded, and highly experienced legal leader to join M&S as our Head of Legal, Regulatory. This is a pivotal role, responsible for advising on a wide range of regulatory matters and related investigations and litigation, and ensuring M&S operates within its legal and compliance risk appetite.
You’ll lead a high-performing team, manage external counsel, and act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the Board on regulatory risks and legal strategy.
To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.
What you’ll do
Your key accountabilities will include
- Ensuring M&S complies with regulatory law and operates within its legal risk appetite.
- Leading on regulatory investigations, enquiries, litigation and enforcement actions (civil and criminal).
- Leading M&S’ relationship with the CMA and other regulators.
- Partnering the Plan A team on ESG.
- Designing and maintaining compliance frameworks in collaboration with business teams. Horizon scanning for new and emerging regulatory developments.
- Managing and developing the Regulatory Legal team, including lawyers and paralegals. Overseeing external legal counsel and ensuring cost-effective legal support.
- Chairing the Mandatory Training Group and overseeing company-wide compliance training. Maintaining strong relationships with key regulators (CMA, GCA, FCA).

Who you are
Your skills and experience will include
- Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) with extensive post-qualification experience in Regulatory Law, including competition law and anti-bribery and sanctions compliance.
- Proven experience handling regulatory investigations and prosecutions.
- Track record of developing and implementing compliance frameworks.
- Strong leadership, team management, and delegation skills.
