The opportunity
Our client is a profitable and highly specialised B2B software company that provides enterprise solutions to protect some of the world's most recognisable household brands from complex cybersecurity threats. This is a pivotal, transitional hire. The company has a brilliant fractional CMO in place until the end of the year to help set up the core marketing infrastructure. They are now looking for a rising star to join them, work alongside the CMO during the transition, and take full strategic and operational ownership of the marketing function and its £700k budget from January 2027. This is a true player-coach role. For the first few months, you will need to be hands-on enough to write copy, ship campaigns, review HubSpot workflows, and brief agency partners. As the transition completes, you will step up to own the strategy, present pipeline performance directly to the CEO and board, and make the final decisions on where budget is spent. If you are a commercially sharp marketer who thrives in autonomous, startup-style environments and wants a clear route to a marketing director or CMO seat, this is a rare opportunity. You need to live within 2 hours of Manchester.
What you will be doing
- Leadership and strategy: Take strategic ownership of the marketing function by the end of the year, reporting directly to the CEO from January. Manage and develop the internal marketing team (including a revops manager) and align closely with sales leadership on the funnel from lead to closed-won. Own the marketing budget, translate commercial objectives into clear, measurable campaigns, and present pipeline performance to the leadership team. Partner with the technical team on analyst relations and ensure the company's core messaging remains sharp and consistent across all channels.
- Campaign execution and content: Write and edit clear, precise content—including blog posts, email campaigns, social posts, and sales enablement assets. Manage external agency partners (paid media, design, and web development) and hold them accountable to measurable commercial outcomes. Oversee the global events programme, combining high-impact industry conferences with smaller, targeted prospect and customer roundtables. Repurpose long-form thought leadership content into native social formats to drive brand awareness and engagement across LinkedIn.
What success looks like
After 6 to 12 months in the role: The marketing transition is complete, and you have taken full strategic control of the function. The company's lead generation engine is predictable, transparent, and trusted by the sales team. Marketing spend is clearly and directly mapped to pipeline value and business revenue. You are operating as a trusted, strategic partner to the executive team.
What we are looking for
- Experience: At least 7 years of B2B marketing experience, ideally with time spent in a high-growth startup or scale-up. Proven track record in B2B SaaS, developer-focused technology, or cybersecurity. Able to read pipeline data, understand conversion rates, and make practical trade-off decisions on budget and prioritisation. A strong working knowledge of HubSpot at a functional level to manage lead scoring, nurture tracks, and sales handoffs.
Mindset
- Curious and self-sufficient: You do not wait for perfect briefs. You are happy to ask questions, solve ambiguous problems, and figure things out.
- Resilient: You enjoy the fast-paced, lean nature of a growing business and are not easily rattled by shifting priorities.
- Collaborative and humble: An ego-free collaborator who is happy to write copy one day and present to the board the next.
Why this role is interesting
- Incredible autonomy: The company does not mandate office hours or track login times. They are completely focused on outcomes and trust their people to run their own days.
- Fantastic culture: A warm, collaborative, and genuinely inclusive team of around 30 people who are passionate about their sector.
- Clear progression: You will be mentored directly by an experienced, fractional CMO with a clear, defined path to step into a long-term director role.
- The setup: You are taking over a newly optimised marketing engine with a healthy agency budget, rather than inheriting a legacy system.
