We are currently looking for an experienced Trade Credit Underwriter to join Markel International’s Trade Credit, Political Risk & Surety team (TCPRS). The role will involve both Risk and Commercial underwriting to develop a portfolio of corporate and banking clients.
Business Unit Overview: The team at Markel is a well‑established and high‑profile team within the global Trade Credit market, providing bespoke solutions to clients across the world through our offices in London, New York, Chicago, Dubai and Singapore. What You’ll Be Doing:
- Working directly with the Markel trade credit team and head of business development to drive forward growth of the portfolio in the region.
- Developing a targeted plan to work with and support key broker partners.
- Managing the credit approval process for existing clients and new business submissions.
- Performing financial analysis of broker submissions.
- Compiling and presenting detailed submissions for peer committee review.
- Assisting the division in achieving its portfolio growth, client retention & loss ratio targets.
- Developing a portfolio of corporate and banking clients through creation of strong partner relationships within broker and banking networks, as well as direct client engagement.
- Developing skills in negotiating policy terms and conditions.
- Marketing and presenting the Markel brand to brokers and insureds.
- Supporting the team with all aspects of the underwriting process.
- Supporting Management with any special projects & ad‑hoc duties as required.
Key Skills:
- Experience within the credit insurance and political risk industry or a related field, with a proven past track record.
- Good understanding of risk underwriting with financial analysis experience, across a wide variety of countries and trade sectors.
- Experience of commercial underwriting (training provided).
- Experience with trade & export finance risk analysis and assessment, including single situation credit and whole turnover XOL business.
- Country risk knowledge.
- Familiarity with key aspects of insolvency legislation in major trading economies.
- Familiarity with analytical tools such as Fitch, Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s, Capital IQ, EIU, IHS Global Insight, BVD, Bloomberg.
- Familiarity with, and an openness to use and/or embrace AI technology as a supporting underwriting tool.
