If you are a senior crime or regulatory lawyer ready to step into – or further develop – a Partner role, this is an opportunity to lead, influence and grow within a highly respected and expanding practice.

Our Crime & Regulatory team is ranked by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners and works on some of the most complex and high profile regulatory matters in the UK. We are seeking a Partner (or Partner‑designate) to join our Crime & Regulatory team in Manchester.

You will play a key role in the strategic leadership, growth and day‑to‑day delivery of a practice advising insured and non‑insured clients across a wide range of regulatory and business crime matters. The team currently comprises experienced solicitors, paralegals and dedicated administrative support, operating within a fast‑paced and collaborative environment.

As a Partner, you will balance hands‑on legal work with leadership, strategy and business development, including:

  • Leading and developing the Crime & Regulatory team alongside fellow Partners
  • Acting as strategic lead on a varied caseload across:
  • Inquests and public inquiries
  • Health & safety, environmental and licensing matters
  • Professional field and subject area work
  • Gross misconduct investigations (including policing matters)
  • Entity regulation, with a focus on CQC and Ofsted
  • Supervising, mentoring and developing junior lawyers
  • Building and strengthening relationships with internal Markel partners & colleagues, insurers, brokers and referrers, corporate clients and business partners
  • Playing a proactive role in business development and practice growth
  • Contributing to firm‑wide strategy, governance and financial performance
  • Supporting marketing, PR and thought leadership activity across the practice
  • What we are looking for:

You will be a senior lawyer with strong technical credibility and commercial instinct, ideally already operating at Partner level or ready to take that next step. You will bring:

    • Significant expertise across crime and regulatory law, with depth in at least two core areas
    • Experience working with legal expenses insurance and general insurance referrals
    • A proven track record of client management, practice development and business growth
    • Strong leadership and people‑management capability
    • Commercial awareness and confidence managing budgets, billing and profitability
    • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to first‑class client care

At Markel, we are proud of our culture. We are people‑first – supportive, inclusive and collaborative; daring – we think further, strive for better and invest in growth; trusted – by clients, insurers and colleagues alike.

    What's in it for you:

    • Competitive Partner‑level remuneration and annual bonus
    • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays (with buy/sell options)
    • Excellent pension, private medical & dental cover
    • Life assurance, income protection and travel insurance
    • Flexible working options and genuine work‑life balance
    • A platform to shape and grow a nationally recognised practice

If you are excited by the opportunity to lead, influence and build, we would love to hear from you. Apply now to start the conversation.

We celebrate the value of a diverse workforce that brings experience and expertise from a wide variety of backgrounds and life circumstances. Whatever your background, if you feel you meet the requirements of this role then we want to hear from you. We are also happy to consider candidates who are looking for flexible working patterns.
