The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for a New Business Underwriter to join the Markel team. You will be a member of a successful national underwriting team dealing exclusively with a variety of care and charity risks in accordance with Markel’s underwriting appetite. We are open to any location for this role as the team are mostly remote based with occasional office visits required.
The role is based within the Care Sales team, dealing with a wide variety of Social Welfare, Care, Not For Profit and Charity policies. Working alongside other departments within the business to develop and maintain relationships both internally and externally and deliver an exceptional service to our brokers.
The role of New Business Underwriter is to work as part of the Sales team providing an excellent underwriting service for brokers in the UK. You will work as a member of the Broker Sales Team and be pro-active and able to develop and maintain good relationships internally and externally.
You will monitor and analyse broker activity to identify success and areas for improvement and provide pro-active feedback to the team manager. You will have responsibility for delivering an individual new business premium target and have a desire to be visible to our brokers.
What you’ll be doing:

Demonstrate and promote a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels in order to achieve monthly, quarterly and annual new business team and individual targets

Provide excellent service to our brokers to ensure deadlines are met

Underwrite a variety of exposures within the defined underwriting authority

Attend underwriting meetings as required throughout the year required to provide insight into developments, trends and feedback on market conditions

Develop and maintain excellent working relationships within the wider business
Our must haves:

Demonstrable underwriting experience – ideally in social welfare/care risks, although commercial insurance would be considered

Excellent written and spoken communication skills

A high level of accuracy and attention to detail

Track record in building and developing broker relationships

Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office and our systems including the broker e-trading platform
-
Proven ability to secure business whilst maintaining underwriting discipline
