Join our Crime & Regulatory team as a Partner at Markel Law and play a key role in shaping our strategy, driving new business and managing a diverse caseload. Our team is ranked in the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners and works on inquests, health & safety, licensing, and regulatory matters for a specialist commercial insurance provider.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an accomplished senior lawyer, either currently at or looking to be promoted to partner, based in Manchester. The team has five fee earners, three paralegals and an administrative assistant, and offers a fast‑paced, varied workload with full training in our internal practices.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support and lead the crime and regulatory team, including strategy, growth, and governance.
- Develop and maintain internal and external client relationships to drive new business.
- Provide contentious and non‑contentious legal advice for insured and uninsured clients.
- Supervise and mentor junior lawyers.
- Oversee budgeting, compliance, supplier and contract management.
- Deliver high quality, commercially focused advice and manage your own caseload to meet billing and financial targets.
- Support the Markel Law advice line and hub services in ensuring content and quality of crime and regulatory matters.
- Own all aspects of team strategic direction, development and marketing, including website, literature and communications.

- Significant expertise in more than one core practice area with proven management experience.
- Understanding of legal‑expense insurance and general‑insurance referrals, and ability to build strong internal and external partnerships.
- Technical excellence and the ability to deliver high‑quality, commercially focused advice.
- Strong client‑management and practice‑development skills, with a track record of bringing in new business.
- Excellent written communication skills and high attention to detail.
- Effective managerial skills with a positive, cooperative team culture.
