This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of portfolio analytics at scale. Sitting at the intersection of technology, underwriting, and strategy, you'll design and deliver innovative solutions that empower portfolio managers across all divisions. You’ll collaborate closely with the rest of the International Portfolio Analytics team, who leverage cutting‐edge advanced analytics, data management, business intelligence, and technical pricing implementation to deliver market‐leading programmes and technologies. Key stakeholders outside of the team will be the Managing Director of the London Market insurance division, underwriting Managing Directors (MDs), the office of the CUO and the Actuarial function.

The International Portfolio Analytics (IPA) team at Markel is a dynamic, multi‐functional group that operates with creativity, autonomy, and empowerment. Embedded within the underwriting business and represented in senior leadership forums, the team supports all divisions of Markel International. Its core focus lies in the key areas essential to driving profitability and performance for a specialty lines insurer: Portfolio Management, Pricing Transformation, Advanced Analytics, and Catastrophe & Exposure Management.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead the creation of innovative analytical tools, models, and dashboards that deliver portfolio‐level insights across all Markel International divisions.
  • Set the technical vision for pricing model calibration and refinement, ensuring alignment with underwriting strategy and portfolio performance.
  • Design scalable solutions that empower underwriters, actuaries, and portfolio managers to explore performance drivers and emerging trends with ease.
  • Establish consistency in model usage across the International Portfolio Management team to drive efficiency, comparability, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate closely with international teams and support units—including actuarial, claims, underwriting operations, ITS, Office of the CUO, delegated authority, and underwriting support services—to resolve challenges and achieve IPA business priorities.
  • Develop metrics and frameworks for assessing underwriting performance and portfolio health, ensuring actionable insights for decision‐makers.
  • Act as the go‐to expert for tools and analytics, providing guidance, enhancements, and training across the business.
  • Support post‐project evaluation by designing tools that monitor outcomes and measure success.
  • Champion innovation, proactively introducing new methodologies, technologies, and process improvements to enhance the team’s analytical capability.

Key Skills

  • Strong coding expertise in Python, SQL, and Excel for data analysis, automation, and handling complex insurance datasets.
  • Ability to translate complex analytical requirements into functional, scalable tools and models that deliver real business impact.
  • Technical actuarial skills with the ability to independently problem‐solve and recommend underwriting strategies.
  • Outstanding communication and data visualisation skills, capable of presenting insights clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven ability to influence and engage stakeholders, ensuring alignment and consensus on technical solutions.
  • Experience in standardising models and analytics frameworks across multiple business units for consistency and efficiency.
  • A proactive, innovative approach with a passion for advancing analytical capabilities and driving continuous improvement.
  • Deep understanding of specialty insurance products, classes of business, and the operations of the specialty insurance market.
  • A strong background of leading and delivering projects to agreed timelines, involving senior business leaders across the organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience with data visualisation tools and exposure to advanced analytics or data science techniques.
