The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced actuarial analyses, based upon generally accepted actuarial principles, and to provide guidance and support to junior Actuaries. The completed analyses will be used by internal stakeholders for data-based decision making. These analyses may relate to various areas of actuarial expertise, including: Pricing, Reserving, Reinsurance, Corporate Reporting, or combinations of these areas. At this level, strong communication skills are essential.

The opportunity: You will join a team of 33 actuarial professionals providing support to Markel's International organisation across multiple geographical locations. While the team is primarily based in London, it operates flexibly across remote and office locations and works closely with colleagues across the business, including teams in the US and other global offices. We travel as necessary, particularly for office visits and conferences (both internally and externally).

The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced actuarial analyses and serve as a subject matter expert on actuarial principles and concepts. This role provides guidance to non-actuarial stakeholders, represents the department on cross-functional teams, prepares and presents actuarial findings, and supports corporate goals and principles through effective communication and knowledge sharing. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide strong technical and operational support to the leader of the product team supporting the specified underwriting divisions, specifically – helping to manage resource, prioritising your and the team’s work, giving support to the rest of the product team and reviewing key deliverables.
  • Maintain strong relations with the underwriting teams within the specified divisions, providing support in reserving and pricing activities. The role will be primarily focussed on reserving but will also include large account pricing, pricing tool validation, business planning and capital model parameterisation.
  • Line manage a junior actuarial student (if applicable).
  • Own various core processes to produce deliverables for external purposes.
  • Provide support to the wider Markel International Actuarial team.

Our must-haves:

  • Be able to manage and engage senior stakeholders and create effective relationships with stakeholders, including Finance, Underwriting, Capital, Reinsurance, Claims etc.
  • Effectively work within and influence a team, including prioritising your and the team’s workloads.
  • Be proficient in a wider variety of actuarial disciplines relating to both pricing and reserving fields.
  • Have experience of engaging with senior underwriters in delivering results, running technical projects to produce analyses for portfolio management and presenting at formal meetings with senior management.
  • Have experience in the actuarial elements of business planning and parameterisation of underwriting and reserve risk.
  • Be present in the London office at least two days a week.
