At Markel, we're not looking for someone to simply underwrite risks.

We're looking for someone who wants to influence portfolio performance, shape underwriting strategy, challenge traditional thinking, and become a trusted technical leader within one of the most important areas of our business.

As our new Technical Underwriter – Care, you'll work alongside the Head of Care, supporting the management and development of our largest portfolio, a book that represents approximately one-third of our UK business.

This is a newly created role designed to provide senior technical expertise, portfolio oversight and underwriting leadership, while creating genuine progression opportunities into future product leadership positions.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Technical Underwriting & Referral Authority
  • Review and support the most complex and high‑value underwriting referrals
  • Act as a senior technical point of contact for the Care portfolio
  • Provide expert underwriting guidance and decision‑making support
  • Support delegated authority and underwriting governance activities
  • Help manage and monitor overall portfolio performance
  • Analyse trends and identify opportunities for profitable growth
  • Contribute to portfolio development initiatives and product enhancements
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build strong relationships across underwriting teams and business functions
  • Support and coach underwriters on technical matters
  • Work with internal teams and external partners to improve outcomes
  • Act as an ambassador for technical excellence across the business
  • Challenge existing processes and identify better ways of working
  • Support innovation and efficiency initiatives
  • Help reduce complexity while maintaining strong underwriting discipline
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of our Care proposition

What We're Looking For

  • Strong technical underwriting capability
  • Experience handling complex referrals and larger risks
  • Knowledge of commercial liability and/or property insurance
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
  • The confidence to challenge constructively and influence others
  • A desire to drive improvement and make an impact
  • Highly Desirable
  • Experience within commercial combined business
  • Experience working with delegated authority business
  • CII qualifications or willingness to continue professional studies
