We handle a broad range of legal services for Markel policyholders, associations and leading businesses across a range of sectors. We are looking for a Solicitor to join our Professional Liability team based in Manchester. Applicants wishing to be based out of Markel’s Leeds office will also be considered. The team comprises 4 fee earners and is part of the Civil Litigation department, which includes partners, solicitors, paralegals and legal administrators.
The firm\’s professional indemnity offering focuses on work for Markel (UK) Limited, a specialist commercial insurer. The team has been ranked in Tier 2 in the Legal 500 since 2023. Coverage work includes professional liability, public liability, property damage and management liability (D&O). Disputes range from small claims to multi-million-pound matters, with key professional risks including construction professionals, accountants, technology professionals and more.
What you’ll be doing
- Work across a broad range of claims with varying subject areas, sums in dispute and complexity.
- Operate within a small core team under supervision from experienced Partners, with access to paralegal and admin support as required.
- Manage your own caseload, including smaller files independently and larger files with Partner supervision.
- Provide clear, accurate, and pragmatic advice based on legal and commercial realities.
- Identify and advise on insurance policy coverage issues.
- Deliver efficient, courteous service aligned with the firm’s procedures and Markel’s customer focus.
- Work toward chargeable hours, billing targets and other KPIs.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to junior colleagues where appropriate.
- Contribute to growth by developing relationships with corporate and individual clients.
- Develop understanding of the insurance industry and the role of a panel law firm in supporting a large insurer.
Our must haves
- 1 – 5 years PQE ideally
- Experience in legal insurance and understanding of legal/insurance relationships, preferably in professional indemnity or property damage liability claims
- Experience advising on insurance policy coverage issues and disputes (defendant perspective preferred)
- Some experience pursuing subrogated recoveries (preferred)
- Ability to handle claims across a range of values and opponents
- Capability to run own caseload under supervision
- Strong communication and organisational skills with good prioritisation
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and legal case management systems
- Willingness to expand knowledge into new areas of law and industry sectors
- Excellent client care and communication skills (written and oral)
- High attention to detail and accurate case management
