About the Role

The Senior Marine and Energy Liability Underwriter will be responsible for demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry in which we operate. The role involves acting as a referral point for underwriters on more complex risk, giving team support, direction and mentoring colleagues using expertise and experience.

Business Unit Overview

The newly created Specialty Division underwrites a portfolio of business in the areas of International Casualty, Trade Credit, Political Risk, Surety, Equine and Livestock, Marine and Energy Liability, and Transport & Logistics on a world-wide basis. We are leaders across our chosen areas and require a commitment to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role. A great emphasis is placed on the relationship between the insured and insurer with a focus on meeting clients and producers in their home territories. Business is written through both Markel Syndicate 3000 and Markel International Insurance Company Limited.

Responsibilities

  • Help in raising the profile of Markel and the team in Marine and Energy Liability.
  • Demonstrate a strategic and structured approach to broker development, communicate the Markel story to brokers and customers in a compelling and credible way that supports the brand.
  • Create and provide Thought Leadership for the Marine and Energy Liability Team.
  • Work with Actuaries, creating strategy for the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with Markel claims colleagues on broker and customer meetings to maximise business development opportunities, studying claims trends and losses to further our Underwriting approach.
  • Challenge wordings/clauses, lead in navigating the complexities of drafting & amending wordings/clauses, and raise concerns to the Director of Marine and Energy Liability.
  • Contribute to innovation within the product suite providing expert input into the creation of new products and proactive input into the refinement of existing products or services relating to the product.
  • Regularly analyse competitors’ products, capabilities and appetite and share within the team.
  • Proactively develop, own and enhance our customer offering within Marine and Energy Liability, actively engaging with customers to identify their needs and provide solutions to problems, as well as seeking new ways to enhance the customer experience.
  • Take the lead in developing and managing key broker relationships.
  • Actively lead and manage pipelines for the team.
  • Influence brokers and advance Markel’s interests through strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Identify new distribution and Delegated/Cover holder opportunities and where appropriate implement them.
  • Manage renewal book of business in line with appetite and strategy, including combined ratio targets.
