The Portfolio Solutions Pricing Lead is a senior, market-facing role embedded within the Structured Portfolio Solutions team.

The role blends actuarial expertise with underwriting judgement, supporting SPS strategy, portfolio development, and long-term profitable growth.

The Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team sits within Markel’s Specialty underwriting division and focuses on building and managing portfolio-based underwriting solutions across multiple lines of business.

SPS works closely with brokers and strategic partners to develop scalable, data-driven structures that support profitable growth and effective portfolio management.

Part of Markel Group, a Fortune 500 company, the team operates globally.

  • What you’ll be doing
  • Price new and existing SPS portfolio-level deals, including complex cross-class structures.
  • Assess and iterate pricing assumptions as deal structures evolve (e. g., limits, classes, territories).
  • Monitor portfolio performance against original pricing and underwriting assumptions.
  • Track premium mix, utilisation, exposure and concentration against plan.
  • Identify emerging risks, blind spots and areas of over- or under-exposure by line of business or geography.
  • Support reserving and reinsurance analysis for SPS portfolios.
  • Define requirements for portfolio monitoring tools and dashboards, including key metrics and outputs.
  • Work in partnership with IPA colleagues to deliver analytical tools and MI.
  • Engage directly with brokers and partners on deal structure, assumptions and portfolio performance.
  • Contribute to SPS strategic discussions, supporting profitable portfolio growth and scalability.
  • Key Skills
  • Strong actuarial or pricing experience within a portfolio, specialty or wholesale insurance environment.
  • Proven ability to analyse and interpret portfolio performance, exposure and concentration data to support underwriting and commercial decision-making.
  • Strong commercial understanding of underwriting strategy, portfolio management and profitable growth.
  • Confidence in engaging with brokers, partners and internal stakeholders on deal structures, assumptions and portfolio performance.
  • Ability to translate complex analytics into clear, actionable insight for underwriters, senior leadership and other non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and build alignment across teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and initiatives, delivering high-quality outcomes to agreed timelines.
  • Strong technical capability in Excel and Microsoft Office, with experience handling and analysing large, complex datasets.
  • Experience with SQL, data visualisation tools or advanced analytics techniques would be advantageous.
