We are investing in our cyber team and have an exciting new opportunity for a Cyber Trading Manager who will lead our National Markets Cyber underwriting team in Manchester, supporting the launch of a new SME Cyber proposition targeting significant GWP growth by 2030.
You'll be responsible for team leadership, trading performance, operational excellence, and broker service across e-trade and open market platforms. This is a high-impact, strategically important role reporting to the Head of Trading. Ideal for a commercially driven leader with experience in either cyber, financial lines , PI, casualty, digital or e-trade underwriting and a passion for building new capabilities.
Who we are:
At Markel, we’re all about people—supporting, empowering, and protecting what matters most. We believe insurance is more than a policy; it’s a promise. As part of the Markel Group (NYSE – MKL), a Fortune 500 company with operations in over 20 countries, we’re building a truly people-first, performance-led business for the long term.
Business Unit Overview:
This role sits within our National Markets UK (NMUK) Broker Channel, the largest and fastest-growing part of our UK business. A core pillar of our UK growth strategy is to expand our presence in the SME Cyber insurance market—a space worth c.£300M and growing 15% annually. As part of this, we are launching a dedicated Cyber centre of excellence based in Manchester to support the delivery of our 2025–2030 UK strategy.
You’re a dynamic trading leader who thrives in fast-moving, high-growth environments. You bring deep underwriting expertise (ideally in Financial Lines or Cyber), a data-driven mentality, and a track record of performance delivery. You’re also a collaborative manager who can inspire and coach a team while building scalable processes.
You’ll be joining at a transformational time—helping to shape a brand-new team and proposition with significant executive backing and a clear path to market leadership. This is your opportunity to build something bold, meaningful, and profitable, right from the start.
Unlike many insurers, we’re combining the scale and strength of a global brand with the agility and intimacy of a local trading unit. Our e-trade and open market model enables us to compete smartly and service brokers with speed, flexibility, and underwriting expertise.
What you’ll be doing:
Lead the UK Cyber trading team (open market and e-trade) with full accountability for performance and service delivery
Develop and implement strategies that deliver profitable GWP growth in line with our 2030 targets
Manage and continuously improve operational efficiency, broker feedback loops, and CRM usage (MS Dynamics 365)
Embed a strong culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability
Build team capability through coaching, mentoring, and training
Ensure outstanding service through consistent SLA delivery and streamlined trading processes
Collaborate with broker distribution leadership to align commercial priorities and accelerate delivery
Represent Markel with credibility, integrity, and a determined approach
Key Skills:
Significant experience in commercial underwriting/trading (Cyber or Financial Lines preferred)
Strong leadership and people management capabilities
Excellent knowledge of the UK SME broker market
CRM expertise, ideally with Microsoft Dynamics 365
Proven ability to deliver operational and financial KPIs
Strong analytical skills and a continuous improvement mindset
Highly collaborative and able to work cross-functionally and cross-regionally
Self-starting, commercially astute, and delivery-focused
What’s in it for you?
A competitive starting salary plus annual bonus & strong benefits package
