The opportunity:
We have an excellent opportunity within our Wordings Team for a Contract Wordings Technician specifically supporting the Markel UK division. The role will report into our Head of Technical Wordings and will work closely with a team of experienced policy wording drafters supporting insurance products across the distribution channels of open market, direct to customer and delegated authority. This is a UK retail insurance focused role and sits within a wider wordings team that handles wordings across all of Markel International, including our London Market, APAC, European, and Canadian operations. The role will have a dotted line into the UK Director of Underwriting and will be expected to work with Markel UK’s underwriters and leadership, drawing on the wider International Technical Wordings Team, to deliver wordings support, including on cross divisional projects. The Technical Wordings Team reports into the Chief Underwriting Officer as part of the Underwriting Strategy and Performance department. This department sits within Markel International’s Corporate Management team, with responsibility for the Performance, Risk, Technical Underwriting, Oversight, Governance, Customer Outcomes and Reinsurance Placement for all underwriting divisions that are part of Markel International. The purpose and mission are to enable profitable underwriting through portfolio optimisation and fostering strategic partnerships internationally, while establishing clear frameworks that deliver insights, support underwriting decisions and seeing opportunities.
What you’ll be doing:
- Providing reviews and advice on various retail open market wordings and products including Markel UK products, Binding Authorities, Cover-holder and broker wordings.
- Work with other team members to provide visibility of workloads and the timely delivery of service to underwriters on wording matters.
- Developing and delivering advice to underwriters on wording related issues and including emerging market, regulatory or legal trends that impact product wording where required.
- To ensure the central wording repository is accurately maintained and keep records and reports relating to wording matters.
- Ensure wordings follow applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to explain sophisticated and technical topics in an approachable and accessible way for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Post bind thematic reviews of product lines.
Our must-haves:
- Knowledge of retail and direct to customer open market insurance business, markets and general insurance related terminology.
- Experience and deep knowledge of FCA requirements around policy wordings, FOS outcomes, customer insurance documentation, IPIDs, Consumer Duty, and conduct risk.
- Experience of collaborating with senior management, senior stakeholders and boards/committees.
- Strong interpersonal and people management skills, ability to drive consensus and negotiations.
- Project management capability.
- Team orientation – it is important that the person works within the team to ensure high standards of product delivery and collaboration.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Experience of legal contract or insurance policy drafting.
- Knowledge and experience with Acturis and/or Websure are assets but not integral.
