The opportunity:
The Leeds based London Market team is solely focused on London Market Claims. The team works closely with the London based claims team and adjusters aligned to specific lines of business. The team will generally handle higher volume, lower value claims and form a key part of Markel’s Claims Value Proposition.
The Team Leader is required to contribute through their own work and the supervision of other team members to achieving the targets set in the annual Claims Business Plan and to identify areas of improvement in the team and to provide proactive feedback to the Claims Manager. Further, in order to deliver on our claims philosophy, this requires exceptional skills by the Claims Adjusters by developing and maintaining relationships both internally (within the claims team, with the underwriting, outwards reinsurance and actuarial teams) and externally (notably brokers, (re)insureds, co-insurers and service providers).
What you’ll be doing:
- Under the direct supervision of the London Market Claims Manager(s), supervise a team of Claims Adjusters, using best practice including regular 1-2-1s.
- Work closely with and provide support to the London Market claims team whilst taking responsibility and handling a portfolio of High Volume, Low Value Claims.
- Take responsibility for monitoring and overseeing the progress of individual team members, whilst being able to prioritise your workload at the same time.
- Handle assigned claims from first notification through to final settlement.
- Update in-house and London market claim related systems in relation to individual claims and ensure the following market are kept apprised of key developments and key information (for example claim potential where this is not fully reserved).
- Diarise and triage claims as required by the Claims Handling Manual and subject these decisions to regular challenge and review.
- Actively lead and take responsibility for the quality of services from TPAs (with delegated claims authority from MINT) as well as lawyers, loss adjusters and any other service providers who represent us.
- Internally build and maintain excellent working relationships with other adjusters within the team, actuaries and underwriters.
- Have a good understanding of the insurance industry and how it works. Claims experience with understanding of Marine preferred.

- Preferably have some experience handling Marine and Energy Liability claims.
- Preferably have some experience managing individuals.

- Take initiative and responsibility for making decisions.
- Want and be able to contribute and generate ideas to improve the operation of the broader claims team.
