The Special Projects Team (SPT) manages all claims deemed ‘legacy’. Legacy is any discontinued business which has been approved for transfer to SPT. All newly discontinued classes of business are considered for transfer to SPT on an annual basis with consideration given to broker/client expectations, claims location, process, expertise, and capacity. A small number of exceptions exist where the claims will continue to be managed within the respective division.

The purpose of the SPT team is to provide strategy and day to day management of MINT’s legacy business under a simplified process and structure, to drive the closure of dormant claims, and to identify and actively seek commutation opportunities. As of March 2026, SPT are managing over 4,000 claims covering multiple classes of business including Marine, Aviation, Motor, A&H, Property, Professional Liability, Medmal, Whole account and General Reinsurance, Casualty Reinsurance, Space etc. for claims emanating from 1993 YOA and post.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management of claims within the SPT portfolio with a particular focus on Reinsurance Casualty.
  • Report on key watchlist claims including attendance at market meetings and liaison with the market practitioners and counsel where required.
  • Ensure accurate claims management and oversight, ensuring adherence to our reserving philosophy and diary management protocol to pro‑actively drive claims performance.
  • Identify, monitor, and report on key complex losses to senior management.
  • Assist with the management of other SPT claims as and where required.
  • Drive, facilitate and deliver a customer focused approach to claims which is measurable through speed of service and open, honest and personable communications with all brokers and (re)insureds.
  • Provide high quality commentary on the weekly movements, monthly and quarterly reports to your management reporting line, highlighting significant new notifications, claim trends or developments.
  • Represent Markel at broker and client meetings promoting the Markel Style and MINT Claims Philosophy.
  • Potentially involve in claim audits and resolution of identified actions.
  • Attend team broker meetings to support delivery of a more customer focused and value adding service.
  • Support delivery of the team’s Key Performance Indicators.

Key Skills

  • Have a working knowledge of the claims environment and be an experienced claims practitioner with relevant London Market experience and using ECF.
  • Be customer focused, in particular to understand the importance of the quality, clarity and speed of service delivery.
  • Experience handling direct and reinsurance claims as well as having strong negotiation skills.
  • Professional and comfortable in representing the company at market and client meetings.
  • Be a team player and be adaptable to multiple classes of business and objectives.
  • Embrace adherence to Markel International’s claims philosophy of being "The most customer focused, nimble and value adding claims team in the market".
  • Have strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Possess strong independent organisational skills.
  • Have strong IT (Microsoft office) skills including Word, Excel and Outlook.
