The opportunity:
We have an excellent opportunity for either an Associate or Senior Associate Solicitor to join our Crime & Regulatory team in our Manchester office. The Crime and Regulatory Team is ranked in both the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. They undertake a variety of types of regulatory work including inquests, health and safety, licensing, CQC/Ofsted entity regulation and professional discipline work. The team currently includes a Partner, five solicitors, three paralegals and an administrative assistant. The work is fast-moving, varied and challenging, and the successful candidate will receive full training in our internal practices and procedures.
Markel Law LLP (Markel Law) is an independent SRA authorised and regulated legal business offering services to both insured and non-insured clients. Our clients and business partners comprise businesses, high net worth individuals, and associations across a broad spectrum of industries.
We operate out of offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon and employ over 60 specialist solicitors. Our legal teams guide, support, defend and protect clients through a wide range of key legal services.
What you’ll be doing:

Be able to demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas of crime and regulatory law:
-
Professional discipline, experience of healthcare regulation is an advantage
-
Police disciplinary investigations
-
Health, safety, environmental and licensing
-
Ofsted and CQC registration and enforcement
-
Business crime and criminal investigations involving regulated professionals
-
Inquests and public inquiries
-
-
Manage and develop relationships with internal Markel partners
-
Demonstrate an understanding of legal expense insurance and liability insurance funded matters
-
Be able to manage their own busy case load – including recommending reserves and setting strategies
-
Deliver billing and other key performance indicators
-
Be able to establish, develop and maintain corporate and individual client relationships – both internally and externally
-
Be able to supervise junior staff on smaller files and delegate tasks to junior colleagues / administrative support staff where necessary and appropriate
-
Work within an established team of 7 lawyers, 2 paralegals, a trainee solicitor and administrative support
-
Provide both contentious and non-contentious legal advice representing businesses and individuals in an insured and uninsured capacity

Be able to consider and advise upon insurance policy coverage issues where necessary
Our must haves:

3 + years PQE

Be able to demonstrate good technical capabilities in our core practice areas around – Inquest work, Professional Discipline, Entity, Interviews Under Caution, Criminal Cases and Police work

Have strong people skills as a significant element of the role will involve supporting distressed clients and dealing with the most sensitive of cases

Be structured, well organised and able to manage competing deadlines and work pressure

Have knowledge of legal/insurance relationships and how to work with our insurer clients

Demonstrate first class client care and communication skills (both written and oral)

Have high attention to detail and sound case management skills
-
Demonstrate positive and co-operative interaction with team members
