The opportunity:

We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Commercial Solicitor to join the team here at Markel Law. This is a new team at Markel Law with this role being a hybrid office-based role from our Manchester office. The work is fast moving and interesting, with high volumes of matters across a board range of commercial, intellectual property and corporate matters.

Markel Law LLP (Markel Law) is an independent SRA authorised and regulated legal business offering services to both insured and non-insured clients. Our clients and business partners comprise businesses, high net worth individuals, and associations across a broad spectrum of industries.

We operate out of offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon and employ over 60 specialist solicitors. Our legal teams guide, support, defend and protect clients through a wide range of key legal services.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts, including franchising, licensing, services, outsourcing agreements, IT agreements, intellectual property licensing arrangements and data protection matters

  • The candidate will need to have a solid foundation in commercial contracts / commercial work and a background within a commercial law firm, public sector department or in house legal department

  • They will be providing support in managing the juniors in the team

  • Strong technical training and a personable, team-first approach

  • IP knowledge and cyber security experience would be highly valued

  • Collaborate on legal process improvements, including automation, templates, and adoption of new technologies

  • Contribute to internal policies, training, and governance initiatives

  • Assisting in disseminating commercial law updates, mail shots, training to clients and across the other Markel Law departments

Our must haves:

  • Experience in undertaking a broad range of commercial work

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

  • Experience of communicating effectively in a professional environment with a range of people

  • Good IT skills across Microsoft, Word, Outlook etc

  • Excellent data entry skills and attention to detail/accuracy

  • Have excellent customer care skills

  • Be commercially aware at all times

  • Have an analytical and problem–solving approach to advice

  • Be able to work in a fast paced environment and uphold company standards

  • Have good document drafting skills and an eye for detail

  • Have the ability to gain and retain the client confidence

  • Have sound working knowledge of all appropriate electronic research facilities
