About The Role

We are seeking a UK‑based Database Administrator / Cloud Database Engineer to help support the next generation of cloud‑based public safety software for UK police forces. In this role, you will help ensure the stability, performance, security, and reliability of Mark43's production database systems. You will work closely with engineering, infrastructure, security, delivery, and customer‑facing teams to support highly available systems used by public safety agencies. In this role, it is expected to independently own well‑scoped database administration tasks, contribute to production reliability, support incident response, and collaborate effectively with senior engineers and DBAs. Because this role may involve work with UK police customers, candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain the required UK police and/or government security vetting, including NPPV3 and, where applicable, SC clearance.

What You'll Do

  • Support the administration, monitoring, and reliability of production database systems.
  • Help ensure MySQL databases are configured, maintained, backed up, and monitored appropriately.
  • Identify, investigate, and help tune problematic queries.
  • Participate in database performance analysis, capacity planning, and operational readiness reviews.
  • Support database‑related incident response, including investigation, remediation, and follow‑up actions.
  • Work with engineering teams to help improve database usage patterns, query performance, and schema design.
  • Contribute to infrastructure‑as‑code workflows and automation for database operations.
  • Help maintain documentation, runbooks, operational procedures, and knowledge‑sharing materials.
  • Collaborate with security and compliance teams to support customer, regulatory, and vetting requirements.
  • Work with UK delivery and customer teams to support public safety deployments in a secure and reliable manner.

What You'll Need

  • At least 4 years of professional experience administering MySQL or similar relational databases in production environments.
  • Experience supporting cloud‑hosted database systems, preferably AWS RDS, Aurora, or Azure database services.
  • Familiarity with database monitoring, alerting, backup, recovery, replication, and performance tuning.
  • Experience troubleshooting database issues in production environments.
  • Comfort working with infrastructure‑as‑code tools and automated operational workflows.
  • A working understanding of cloud infrastructure, networking, security, and access controls.
  • Ability to collaborate with software engineers to improve query performance and database design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A high degree of ownership, attention to detail, and operational discipline.
  • Eligibility and willingness to complete UK police vetting requirements for customer‑facing public safety work.

UK Security Vetting Requirement

This role may require access to UK police customer systems, infrastructure, operational data, or secure customer environments. As a result, the successful candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance before accessing police data, systems, or premises. Depending on the assignment, this may include:

  • NPPV3 clearance for work involving UK police systems, infrastructure, or operational data.
  • SC clearance where work involves central government, cross‑agency, or SECRET‑level systems.

Employees must complete the required vetting process, provide accurate documentation, and comply with ongoing aftercare obligations, including promptly reporting any personal, financial, legal, or other circumstances that may affect vetting status.

People Who Thrive at Mark43

  • Humble, open, and curious.
  • Attentive, active listeners.
  • Resilient when facing challenging operational problems.
  • Enthusiastic collaborators who believe in shared ownership.
  • Comfortable working through uncertainty.
  • Passionate about personal and professional growth.
  • Eager to support teammates and share knowledge.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting AWS RDS, Aurora, or Azure database platforms.
  • Experience with microservices‑based architectures.
  • Experience supporting SaaS platforms, public sector customers, or regulated environments.
  • Experience working with incident management, SLOs, SLAs, or production readiness processes.
  • Experience contributing to automation, observability, or database reliability improvements.
