The Fabricator / Welder is responsible for carrying out fabrication, welding, plate preparation, structural assembly, modification, repair, and refurbishment activities across MDL's equipment fleet and facilities. The role supports the manufacture of new equipment, refurbishment of existing assets, maintenance activities, mobilisation scopes, and general operational requirements across the business. The position will support activities at both MDL's Peterhead facilities and Peterhead Energy Service Base (PESB), including fabrication support for the MDL carousel system, cable handling equipment, storage infrastructure, containers, and associated operational equipment. The role requires a strong commitment to quality, safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement while supporting the wider Assets & Operations team in delivering equipment and facilities ready for operational use.
Role Accountabilities
- Fabrication & Welding Activities: Carry out fabrication, welding, fitting, plate preparation, and structural assembly activities in accordance with drawings, specifications, and procedures. Perform cutting, grinding, drilling, fitting, and preparation of steelwork and fabricated assemblies. Manufacture, modify, repair, and refurbish equipment, structures, and components to required standards. Support fabrication requirements across FlexLay (FLS), Winch & Lifting Solutions (WLS), maintenance, refurbishment, and new build scopes.
- Plate Preparation & Structural Fabrication: Measure, mark out, cut, shape, and prepare steel plate and structural sections. Interpret fabrication drawings and work packs to ensure accurate manufacture. Assemble fabricated components and structures to required tolerances. Maintain quality standards throughout fabrication and welding activities.
- Equipment Build & Refurbishment Support: Support build, modification, repair, and refurbishment of MDL equipment. Work alongside mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical personnel to deliver integrated equipment scopes. Assist with equipment upgrades and engineering modifications. Support preparation of equipment for testing, mobilisation, and operational use.
- PESB & Carousel Support: Support fabrication, maintenance, and modification activities associated with the MDL carousel system and cable handling equipment located at Peterhead Energy Service Base. Assist with fabrication of storage containers, handling frames, equipment supports, operational infrastructure, and associated facilities. Support mobilisation, demobilisation, and maintenance activities associated with carousel operations and cable handling projects. Contribute to the long-term development and operational success of MDL's Peterhead Energy Service Base activities.
- Workshop & Site Activities: Support workshop, yard, and site-based fabrication activities. Participate in equipment load-outs, installations, and site works where required. Maintain good housekeeping standards within workshop and work areas. Support lifting, handling, and movement of fabricated assemblies and equipment.
- Quality & Documentation: Ensure fabrication and welding activities comply with drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. Complete fabrication records and associated documentation as required. Report defects, non-conformances, and improvement opportunities. Support inspection and verification activities.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve fabrication methods, efficiency, quality, and safety. Support implementation of lessons learned and process improvements. Contribute to innovation and practical improvements within workshop operations.
- HSEQ: Work safely at all times in accordance with MDL procedures and safe systems of work. Participate actively in HSEQ initiatives and training. Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions. Stop any activity that is unsafe or not compliant with MDL standards. Promote a positive safety culture and lead by example.
Skills & Experience:
- Time-served Fabricator / Welder apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
- Experience in fabrication, welding, and structural assembly.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings.
- Experience with carbon steel fabrication and welding processes.
- Experience using fabrication workshop tools and equipment.
- Forklift, MEWP, or lifting qualifications advantageous.
- Experience in offshore, heavy engineering, energy, marine, or industrial sectors desirable.
