Senior Naval Architect
Location: Portsmouth
Employment: Full Time Permanent
Salary: c£50,000 – £70,000 (depending on experience)

Responsibilities
- Liaise with clients to interpret requirements and produce robust technical proposals.
- Analyse key project success criteria, balancing performance outcomes, technical risks, and budget constraints.
- Lead or contribute to the preparation of technical scopes, costings, and timescales.
- Act as technical lead for vessel performance assessments (powering and motions) and oversee progress, budget, and risk reporting.
- Provide expert advice to colleagues and clients, interfacing with wider ship design teams to deliver practical, actionable solutions.
- Lead or support model tests, sea trials, and site surveys.
- Produce clear technical reports suitable for a range of audiences, from internal stakeholders to senior client representatives.
- Project Management & Coordination: Manage subcontractors, including scoping, performance monitoring, and reviewing outputs across specialist disciplines.
- Ensure all project work—whether in office, workshop, testing facilities, or onboard vessels—meets industry, statutory, and safety standards.
- Ensure technical outputs are reviewed, checked, and approved in accordance with company procedures.
Knowledge & Qualifications
Essential:
- Degree-qualified (BEng, MEng, MSc or equivalent) in Naval Architecture or related discipline.
- Strong engineering background with demonstrable knowledge of hydrodynamic performance through simulation, model testing, and sea trials.
- Ability to travel in the UK and overseas at short notice.
Desirable:
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status with RINA or similar professional body.
- Experience in CFD performance assessments, model testing, and shipboard trials.
- Practical experience in trials instrumentation and acquisition software.
- Knowledge of DP assessment methods, noise/vibration analysis, and internationally recognised sea trial methods (ITTC, ISO).
- Awareness of Classification society and Flag State requirements.
- Full UK driving licence.
Software Skills (Desirable):
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project).
- CAD software such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, SolidWorks.
- CFD tools such as FineMarine, openFOAM, or equivalent.
- Python coding for data acquisition and analysis.
