Marico Marine is growing! This is an exciting opportunity for a Principal Consultant (Maritime) to join our team of high achieving maritime specialists and to play a key role in supporting project work across our business based in Bramshaw near Southampton.

Following a successful induction period, the expectation is that this post will be office-based, with up to two days a week working from home. Flexibility will be required here to support operational demands. The role is full time (37.5 hours per week) with a starting salary commensurate with skills and experience.

Pension: Company contribution of 10% of Salary. Available 6 months after completing successful probation period.

The role is always varied and includes the following tasks:

  1. Undertaking (Port Marine) safety audits of port operations;
  2. Reviews of port operations & risk assessments;
  3. Provision of independent Designated Person and marine safety service contracts. (Undertaking role of Designated Person);
  4. Expert witness duties;
  5. Vessel Traffic Survey and Remote Vessel Tracking studies;
  6. Mooring studies;
  7. Development of Safety Management Systems and Emergency Plans;
  8. Interfacing with Marico’s own Training, Software and Equipment departments.

Candidates should have acquired one or more of the following attributes through a career in a marine based industry:

Knowledge:

  • A detailed knowledge of the UK Port Marine Safety Code and associated Guide to Good Practice on Port Operations;
  • A knowledge of legislation and regulation applicable to UK ports (e.g. knowledge of SHA, CHA, HSE requirements);
  • A good understanding of all aspects of shipping and ports – noting applicants may be specialised in their own field.

Qualifications:

  • While there is no minimum qualification for this role, recognising the many routes followed to marine professional recognition, as a guide, applicants may be expected to have one or more of the following (or equivalent):
  • Master Mariner or equivalent (e.g. Naval Officer) certification, or demonstrable long-term experience within a marine or harbour environment;
  • Educated to degree level in a numerate discipline;
  • A Harbour Master’s diploma or similar;
  • Chartered membership of a professional body.

While not essential, other relevant qualifications will be welcomed, e.g:

  • NEBOSH or similar Health and Safety;
  • ISO Accredited auditor;
  • Port Security Officer accreditation, etc.

At least 5 years’ senior experience in a relevant industry, preferably at management level would be advantageous, though specialist experience in a relevant role such as Harbour Master, Deputy Harbour Master, Marine Pilot, VTS manager or similar would be welcomed.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Confidence when addressing high level clients (e.g., Board level presentations);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Good computer literacy in MS Office and a willingness to learn new technical skills;
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy;
  • Self-motivation;
  • Overall, you will be able to demonstrate drive and ambition and be able to fit in with a small team of committed but friendly individuals;
  • Right to work in the UK;
  • Full Driving Licence.
