The Opportunity
Worcester is a historic cathedral city with a rich manufacturing and engineering legacy—from traditional porcelain craftsmanship to contemporary precision engineering, cyber security development, and advanced machine tools. We are seeking a practical, meticulous, and safety-conscious Design & Technology (DT) Technician to join a progressive academy. In this critical support role, you will manage our design studios, preparation rooms, and workshop machinery, ensuring that students have the safe, expertly organized environments needed to transform abstract designs into high-quality physical prototypes.
The School
Operating as an independent academy within a forward-thinking multi-academy trust, our school combines innovative educational practice with robust operational support. We benefit from centralized administrative and estates networks, freeing our frontline staff to focus entirely on maintaining an exceptional site environment. We implement explicit, highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that keep our campus quiet, respectful, and orderly. This structured environment ensures that our technical workshops are treated with maximum respect by the student body, creating a calm, safe, and highly focused environment for our technical staff.
The DT Department & Creative Infrastructure
You will join a highly successful, collaborative Design and Technology faculty that treats design as a rigorous engineering discipline. The department features contemporary, purpose-built workspaces equipped with a blend of traditional machinery (bandsaws, pillar drills, sanders) and modern digital manufacturing technology (CAD/CAM, 3D printers, laser cutters). Our operational framework explicitly prioritises preventative maintenance and strict material preparation, ensuring that lessons run seamlessly and tool safety protocols are seamlessly maintained. Staff benefit from clear operating procedures and shared maintenance schedules, ensuring that material stock management and tool sharpening routines are handled smoothly and sustainably.
Core Responsibilities
- Workshop Health & Safety Compliance: Maintaining rigorous health and safety standards across all workshops and prep rooms, including checking safety guards, updating risk assessments, and monitoring COSHH logs.
- Material & Resource Preparation: Selecting, scaling, and cutting down workshop materials (timbers, polymers, metals, and textiles) using appropriate machinery to prepare raw stocks for class practical units.
- Machinery Maintenance & Calibration: Undertaking regular maintenance, cleaning, and sharpening of hand tools and fixed machinery, alongside calibrating 3D printers and laser cutters to guarantee peak accuracy.
- Live Classroom Technical Support: Providing essential technical guidance and demonstration assistance to students during practical sessions, supporting teachers in ensuring safe tool handling and machining.
- Stock Control & Procurement: Managing the department’s inventory of consumables, parts, and safety equipment, ordering new provisions systematically within budget allocations ahead of new term projects.
The Successful Candidate
We are looking for a reliable, highly capable, and solution-oriented individual who has a passion for building, making, and creating an orderly working environment. Your profile should include:
- Practical Technical Capability: Strong handyperson or workshop experience—ideally within an educational technology setting, engineering workshop, or relevant trade background (e.g., carpentry, product design, pattern making).
- Machinery Certifications (or willingness to train): Direct familiarity with or formal certification in operating standard wood/metalworking machinery (such as DATA accreditation) is highly desirable.
- Meticulous Eye for Detail: An uncompromising approach to physical safety, workshop cleanliness, and material storage regulations, with a proactive mindset toward preventative tool maintenance.
- Collaborative Communication: A patient, approachable manner when assisting students with practical construction problems and coordinating with teaching staff to structure lesson resources.
Why Join Our Support Staff?
The distinct satisfaction of working within a progressive academy setting where your technical skills directly empower the next generation of engineers, designers, and craftspeople. Comprehensive internal induction and continuous training covering advanced workshop safety frameworks, CAD/CAM machinery calibration, and educational first-aid. The exceptional lifestyle benefits of living and working in Worcester—offering highly affordable residential areas, beautiful riverside parks, an iconic cultural history, and rapid rail links straight into Birmingham, Gloucestershire, and the South West. A supportive School Business Manager and senior leadership team that respects technical staff workloads, provides stable working hours, and fully values your vital role in the school's operational success.
