Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
Deliver high-quality English Language and Literature lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, with the opportunity to teach Key Stage 5 where appropriate.
Plan and deliver engaging, well-structured lessons that develop students' reading, writing, analytical and communication skills.
Prepare students for GCSE and A Level examinations, ensuring strong academic outcomes.
Differentiate teaching to meet the needs of all learners, supporting both high-achieving students and those requiring additional support.
Assessment & Progress
Monitor, assess and track student progress using a range of assessment strategies.
Provide timely and constructive feedback to support student development.
Use assessment data to identify underachievement and implement effective interventions.
Support students in developing examination techniques and independent study skills.
Student Support & Pastoral Care
Act as a form tutor, supporting students' academic, personal and social development.
Build positive relationships that promote engagement, excellent attendance and high aspirations.
Contribute to safeguarding and student welfare in accordance with school policies.
Curriculum & Department Contribution
Contribute to the development of the English curriculum and departmental resources.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to share best practice and enhance teaching and learning.
Participate in departmental meetings, moderation and quality assurance activities.
Support enrichment opportunities including book clubs, creative writing competitions, theatre visits, author events and literacy initiatives.
Wider School Contribution
Participate in parents' evenings, open events and school productions.
Contribute to the wider life of the school through extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities.
Engage in continuous professional development and contribute positively to the school community.
Person Specification
Essential
A degree in English or a related subject.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent teaching qualification.
Experience teaching English at Key Stages 3 and 4.
Strong subject knowledge across English Language and Literature.
Excellent communication, organisation and classroom management skills.
Ability to inspire students and foster a love of reading and literature.
Desirable
Experience teaching English at A Level.
Experience working within a secondary school setting.
Strong track record of raising student achievement and progress.
Knowledge of current curriculum developments and assessment requirements.
Personal Qualities
Passionate about English education and student achievement.
Positive, reflective and adaptable approach to teaching.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Commitment to inclusive teaching and high expectations for every learner.
Working Hours
Monday to Friday.
Full-time teaching timetable in line with school expectations.
