CORE PURPOSE

We require an engaging, highly articulate English Teacher to deliver outstanding English Language and English Literature instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Operating within a dedicated non-selective community school, the successful candidate will facilitate a knowledge-rich, text-centredcurriculum designed to foster deep analytical reading, sophisticated written expression, and confident oratory skills, preparing all pupils thoroughly for terminal GCSE English public examinations.

THE SCHOOL

Our community school is a vibrant, non-selective secondary school committed to providing an exceptional, well-rounded education for all local young people. The campus features a newly resourced learning resource centre, technology-enhanced English classrooms, and a highly collaborative humanities and communications faculty. Our behaviour management framework is built upon clear expectations, restorative approaches, and consistency, maintaining a calm, highly purposeful learning environment that allows pupils to confidently engage in textual analysis, creative writing, and respectful debate.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Text-Centred English Instruction: Plan, resource, and deliver high-quality English lessons across all attainment pathways, embedding consistent retrieval practice to cement knowledge of complex literary forms, historical contexts, and structural devices.

  • Closing Literacy Gaps: Identify and target reading and writing misconceptions, deploying structured scaffolding, Tier 3 vocabulary instruction, and targeted reading interventions to accelerate the progress of all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEND).

  • Rigorous Examination Preparation: Guide Year 11 cohorts systematically through the demands of terminal GCSE English Language and English Literature papers, teaching explicit essay-writing structures, close-text analysis, and time-management techniques.

  • Data-Driven Interventions: Meticulously analyse formative assessment data and mock exam scripts to pinpoint specific weaknesses in expression or analysis, deploying immediate, targeted SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) and thesis-building workshops.

  • Community Pastoral Care: Fulfil full form tutor responsibilities within an established year group structure, managing daily registration, delivering pastoral curriculum units, and maintaining proactive, supportive communication with families.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, or a closely related humanities discipline.

  • Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver strong progress metrics in terminal public GCSE examinations across both English Language and English Literature through structured, explicit literacy pedagogy.

  • Inclusive Mindset: An unwavering commitment to non-selective, comprehensive education, demonstrating the patience, clarity, and adaptability required to build reading confidence and foster a genuine love for literature in pupils of all abilities.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Black Country Literary Heritage & Modern Community Hub: Based in the industrial town of Walsall, the school capitalizes on a unique regional identity deeply rooted in the heavy manufacturing history of the Black Country, a region celebrated for its distinctive heritage and contributions to working-class literature and folklore. This local context provides a rich backdrop for exploring socio-economic themes, language variation, and identity within the English curriculum, connecting classroom analysis straight to local heritage and contemporary multicultural storytelling.

  • Connectivity & Infrastructure: The campus benefits from premium West Midlands transport infrastructure, offering straightforward road commuting via the M6 motorway (Junctions 7, 9, and 10), the A34, and the A38 trunk roads. Public transit links are exceptionally efficient, utilizing the extensive regional bus networks and Walsall railway station, which provides regular, direct West Midlands Railway services straight to Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, and Cannock, making it easily accessible for professionals across Birmingham and the wider Black Country.
