Key Responsibility: Deliver engaging and high-quality English lessons that develop students’ skills in reading, writing, analysis, and communication.

Role Purpose: The English Teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective lessons in English Language and Literature, inspiring students to develop strong literacy skills and a deeper appreciation for texts and storytelling. The role involves supporting students’ academic progress, preparing them for GCSE examinations, and contributing to a dynamic English department that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and academic excellence. The post holder will contribute positively to the ethos, aims, and wider work of the school.

English Teacher – Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Learning: Plan and deliver high-quality English Language and Literature lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4 (KS5 desirable). Develop students’ skills in reading, writing, analysis, and critical thinking. Prepare students effectively for GCSE examinations and coursework requirements. Use a range of teaching strategies to engage learners of all abilities. Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports learning and participation.
  • Curriculum and Assessment: Contribute to the planning and development of the English curriculum within the department. Assess and monitor student progress using formative and summative assessment methods. Use assessment data to inform teaching strategies and improve student outcomes. Set and review academic targets to support student achievement. Provide constructive feedback to help students develop their literacy and analytical skills.
  • Student Support: Differentiate teaching to support SEND, EAL, and high-achieving students. Maintain high expectations for behaviour and engagement in line with school policies. Encourage students’ confidence in expressing ideas through writing and discussion. Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding student progress and attainment.
  • Department and School Contribution: Work collaboratively with colleagues within the English department. Attend departmental meetings, staff briefings, and professional development sessions. Contribute to enrichment activities such as reading clubs, creative writing projects, or theatre visits. Support whole-school initiatives focused on improving literacy and communication skills.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Attend staff training days (INSET) and ongoing professional development. Support school events such as open evenings and transition activities. Contribute to extracurricular activities that promote reading and literacy. Carry out additional duties as directed by the Headteacher or Senior Leadership Team.
