A thriving secondary academy in Swindon is seeking an organized, empathetic, and firm School Attendance Officer to join its Pastoral Support Team for an immediate (ASAP) start.

Job Overview

Student attendance is directly linked to academic achievement and safeguarding. As the Attendance Officer, you will monitor daily student registration, investigate unexplained absences, conduct home visits where required, and collaborate with parents, Pastoral Leads, and local authority Education Welfare Officers (EWOs) to improve overall attendance figures across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage morning registration data entry using school management information systems (e.g., SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom)

  • Operate the first-day calling process, contacting parents and carers regarding unexcused student absences

  • Analyze daily, weekly, and monthly attendance trends to identify persistent absenteeism (PA) pupils

  • Issue formal attendance letters, organize parental attendance panel meetings, and draft legal intervention paperwork for local authorities

  • Work closely with Heads of Year, Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs), and EWOs to implement targeted attendance reward schemes and support plans

  • Produce detailed statutory attendance reports for Senior Leadership and School Governors

Candidate Requirements

  • Prior experience working in a school office, pastoral team, or attendance/welfare role

  • High level of proficiency in school MIS databases (SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom, or similar)

  • Firm yet empathetic communication skills when handling sensitive conversations with parents

  • Strong data analysis skills and attention to detail

  • Active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service
