This critical middle leadership position involves setting the strategic direction for English across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 (including GCSE English Language & Literature and A-Level English Literature / Language). You will report directly to Senior Leadership, driving departmental excellence and ensuring exceptional outcomes for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Formulate and execute a vision for the English Department that raises attainment, inspires literacy, and promotes outstanding teaching standards across all key stages.

  • Curriculum Design: Oversee a rich, diverse, and rigorous English curriculum that challenges pupils, reflects contemporary and classic literature, and prepares students for national examinations.

  • Teaching & Learning Quality: Monitor classroom standards through regular learning walks, work scrutinies, and lesson observations, delivering constructive coaching and continuous professional development for departmental staff.

  • Team Leadership & Line Management: Support, mentor, and deploy English teaching staff effectively, building a collaborative, high-performing, and passionate team culture.

  • Data Analysis & Student Progress: Track and evaluate student achievement data systematically, implementing targeted interventions for underperforming pupils and closing attainment gaps.

  • Resource & Budget Control: Manage departmental resources and budgets efficiently to support teaching, learning, and extracurricular literacy initiatives.

Requirements

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS, alongside a degree in English Literature, English Language, or a related subject.

  • Experience: Proven track record of outstanding teaching up to Key Stage 5, with successful leadership experience (e.g., Head of English, Second in Department, or Key Stage Coordinator).

  • Track Record: Demonstrated ability to drive measurable improvements in student progress and exam results at GCSE and A-Level.

  • Leadership Attributes: Exceptional communication skills, strategic vision, strong organizational capability, and the ability to motivate both staff and students.

  • Safeguarding: An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or willingness to complete a full check prior to start).

What the School Offers

  • A supportive, forward-thinking Senior Leadership Team committed to staff development and well-being.

  • Opportunities for senior leadership progression and professional development (including support for NPQ courses).

  • Modern, well-resourced learning environments and specialized literacy facilities.

  • Outstanding public transport links across West London (District, Circle, and Hammersmith & City lines).
