The Opportunity

Stevenage is a town with a global outlook, home to world-leading aerospace and biotechnological industries that rely on international communication. We are seeking a passionate Spanish Teacher to join our modern languages faculty. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with significant opportunities to lead A-Level Spanish for the right candidate. You will be responsible for bringing the Hispanic world to life—from the streets of Madrid to the vibrant cultures of Latin America—helping our students become confident, global communicators.

The Department

You will join a dedicated MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) team that prioritizes "Language for Life," moving beyond rote memorization to focus on spontaneous speaking and authentic cultural immersion. The department is well-resourced with language labs, interactive software (such as SentenceBuilders or Linguascope), and a wealth of authentic Spanish media, including film, music, and literature. We utilize a "Phonics-First" approach to teaching Spanish, ensuring students have a robust foundation in pronunciation and decoding from their first lesson in Year 7. We benefit from established international links, offering students the chance to participate in exchange programs, virtual pen-pal schemes, and immersion trips to Spain.

Core Responsibilities

  • Delivering high-impact lessons that balance the four key skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
  • Teaching complex grammatical structures—from the present tense to the nuances of the subjunctive—in a way that is accessible, logical, and fun.
  • Preparing Year 11 and Year 13 students for GCSE and A-Level examinations (AQA or Edexcel), with a heavy focus on translation skills and literary analysis at Post-16.
  • Implementing creative retrieval practice to help students build and retain a vast working vocabulary across a range of themes (Identity, Local Area, Global Issues, etc.).
  • Leading extracurricular initiatives, such as a "Spanish Film Club," Hispanic cooking workshops, or preparing students for national translation competitions.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for a linguist who can inspire students to see language learning as a "passport to the world." Requirements include:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Spanish or a related Hispanic Studies field.
  • A high level of target language proficiency (native or near-native) and a deep understanding of Hispanic cultures and customs.
  • A proven ability to motivate students of all abilities, fostering a classroom environment where students feel confident "having a go" at speaking a new language.
  • Excellent pedagogical skills, particularly the use of modelling and scaffolding to support students in producing high-quality extended writing.

Why Join Us?

  • A school that treats Modern Foreign Languages as a core academic pillar, recognizing its value for social mobility and employability.
  • Access to a structured CPD program focused on the latest developments in second-language acquisition and cognitive science.
  • A supportive, professional staff culture within a town that offers excellent housing options and a strong sense of community.
  • Located in a prime Hertfordshire hub with exceptional transport links, providing direct access to London King’s Cross in under 25 minutes.
