Food Technology Teacher | Southport

An Outstanding Secondary School in Southport is seeking to appoint a passionate and creative Food Technology Teacher to join its successful Design & Technology Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher who enjoys practical, hands-on learning and is committed to helping students develop both their technical skills and understanding of food, nutrition and food science.

Food Technology teaching opportunities in the Southport and wider Sefton area have highlighted the demand for teachers with strong subject knowledge and the ability to deliver engaging practical lessons across KS3 and KS4.

The Role

You will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality Food Technology lessons, combining practical activities with appropriate theoretical content. Students should be encouraged to develop strong cooking techniques while gaining an understanding of nutrition, food safety, food science, sustainability and healthy eating.

The role will primarily involve teaching across KS3 and KS4, with the opportunity to contribute to KS5 depending on experience and departmental requirements. GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition experience would be particularly advantageous.

You will also be expected to maintain high standards of behaviour and safety during practical lessons, assess student progress effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues across the Design & Technology Department.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons across KS3 and KS4

• Deliver practical cookery and food preparation activities safely and effectively

• Teach relevant theoretical content including nutrition, food science and food safety

• Prepare students effectively for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

• Develop students' confidence with ingredients, equipment and cooking techniques

• Create practical lessons that encourage creativity and independent thinking

• Assess and monitor student progress using a range of appropriate methods

• Provide constructive feedback to support student development

• Maintain excellent food hygiene and health and safety standards

• Manage behaviour effectively during practical activities

• Ensure specialist classrooms and equipment are used appropriately

• Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development

• Work closely with colleagues and technical support staff

• Support enrichment activities and wider school opportunities

• Promote sustainable, healthy and responsible approaches to food

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic and practical background in Food Technology, Food Preparation and Nutrition, or a closely related Design & Technology discipline.

Essential Requirements

• QTS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification

• Recent experience teaching Food Technology at secondary level

• Strong subject knowledge across practical and theoretical Food Technology

• Confidence teaching KS3 and KS4

• Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills

• Strong understanding of food hygiene and practical safety

• Excellent organisational and communication skills

• Ability to differentiate effectively for students of different abilities

• Commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing

Desirable

• GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition teaching experience

• KS5 teaching experience

• Knowledge of food science, nutrition and sustainability

• Experience using specialist Food Technology equipment

• Experience contributing to curriculum development

• Previous experience within a successful secondary Design & Technology Department
