A renowned school in Southampton is seeking a reliable, technically skilled and proactive Audio Visual Technician to join its support team. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring the school's AV equipment, digital systems and event technology operate effectively, supporting high-quality teaching, learning and school events.

Role Purpose

The Audio Visual Technician will provide practical and technical support across the school, ensuring classrooms, meeting spaces, halls and performance areas are equipped and ready for use.

The role will involve setting up and operating AV equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining systems and supporting staff and students with the effective use of audio visual technology.

Audio Visual Technician – Key Responsibilities

AV and Classroom Support

  • Set up, operate and maintain audio visual equipment across classrooms and school facilities.

  • Support teachers and staff with projectors, interactive displays, screens, speakers, microphones and other AV systems.

  • Troubleshoot technical issues quickly and provide practical solutions.

  • Ensure classrooms and teaching spaces are fully equipped and ready for lessons.

  • Provide technical support for presentations, assemblies, meetings and school activities.

  • Assist staff and students with the effective use of AV equipment and technology.

Events and Productions

  • Provide AV support for assemblies, parents' evenings, open evenings, conferences and school events.

  • Set up microphones, speakers, lighting, projectors and presentation systems for events.

  • Support school performances, productions and other large-scale activities.

  • Operate AV systems during events and respond to technical issues as required.

  • Assist with recording, streaming or live presentation requirements where applicable.

Equipment and Systems Management

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of AV equipment and associated resources.

  • Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance of AV systems.

  • Monitor equipment condition and report faults or replacement requirements.

  • Manage the safe storage and organisation of AV equipment, cables and accessories.

  • Assist with the installation and setup of new technology and equipment.

  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors regarding repairs, servicing and technical issues.

Technical Support

  • Provide day-to-day technical assistance to staff and students.

  • Support the use of digital presentation and conferencing platforms.

  • Assist with video conferencing, recording and streaming equipment where required.

  • Provide technical troubleshooting across a range of AV systems.

  • Keep up to date with new AV technologies and developments relevant to education.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure AV equipment is used safely and in accordance with school procedures.

  • Carry out appropriate checks of equipment, cables and electrical connections.

  • Ensure equipment is safely stored and transported around the school.

  • Report damaged or faulty equipment promptly.

  • Follow relevant school health and safety procedures at all times.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Work closely with teaching and support staff to understand their technical requirements.

  • Provide clear guidance and support to colleagues using AV equipment.

  • Communicate effectively with external suppliers, contractors and service providers.

  • Work collaboratively with the wider IT and school operations teams.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend relevant staff training and meetings when required.

  • Support school open evenings, exhibitions, performances and curriculum events.

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the school's AV provision.

  • Undertake additional reasonable duties as directed by the relevant line manager.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience working with AV, technical support, IT or digital technology.

  • Experience setting up and operating audio visual equipment.

  • Experience troubleshooting technical issues in a professional environment.

  • Experience supporting events, presentations or live productions is desirable.

  • Previous experience within a school or educational environment is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong practical knowledge of audio visual equipment and systems.
