The Opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed English Teacher to join a welcoming and ambitious school in Southampton.

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who is passionate about English and enjoys inspiring young people to become confident readers, thoughtful writers and independent thinkers. You will join a supportive teaching team where creativity, high expectations and a genuine commitment to pupil progress are valued.

Whether you are an experienced teacher or an ambitious teacher looking to develop your career, we are looking for someone who can bring energy, enthusiasm and a love of English into the classroom.

The Role

As an English Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering engaging and challenging lessons that encourage pupils to develop their knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.

You will:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons that engage and challenge pupils of different abilities.

  • Teach literature and language across the relevant age and ability ranges.

  • Create a positive classroom environment where pupils feel confident to contribute and express their ideas.

  • Develop pupils' reading, writing, speaking and analytical skills.

  • Use a range of teaching approaches and resources to make lessons purposeful and enjoyable.

  • Assess pupil progress regularly and use feedback to support continued development.

  • Set high expectations for behaviour, effort and academic achievement.

  • Provide appropriate support and challenge to meet individual learning needs.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop schemes of work and contribute to curriculum planning.

  • Support pupils in preparing for GCSE examinations where appropriate.

  • Contribute to departmental meetings, moderation and wider school initiatives.

  • Take an active role in the wider life of the school, including enrichment activities and school events.

What Makes You the Right Fit?

We are looking for a teacher who combines strong subject knowledge with warmth, enthusiasm and a genuine interest in helping young people succeed.

You will ideally have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.

  • A degree or strong academic background in English or a related subject.

  • Previous experience teaching English within a secondary school setting.

  • Good knowledge of the English curriculum and current assessment requirements.

  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive learning environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A reflective and adaptable approach to teaching.

  • High expectations of yourself and your pupils.

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a supportive department.

  • A genuine passion for English and for helping pupils achieve their potential.

What the School Offers

You will be joining a school that values its staff and recognises that great teaching is supported by a positive and collaborative working environment.

The school offers:

  • A supportive and welcoming teaching team.

  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression.

  • A well-established English curriculum and collaborative approach to planning.

  • A positive and inclusive school community.

  • Access to a range of enrichment and extracurricular opportunities.

  • A culture where staff are encouraged to share ideas and develop their practice.

  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils' confidence, progress and future success.

Beyond the Classroom

We are looking for someone who wants to become part of the wider school community, not simply teach their timetable.

You may have an interest in reading, debating, creative writing, drama, journalism or another area that could enrich pupils' experience of English. The school welcomes teachers who are keen to contribute to clubs, competitions, trips and other activities that bring learning to life.

Safeguarding

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check, and provide satisfactory references. The successful candidate will be expected to comply fully with the school's safeguarding, child protection, health and safety and professional conduct policies.
