English Teacher Role in a Grammar School

A highly successful Grammar School in Southampton is seeking to appoint an inspiring and committed English Teacher to join its outstanding English department from September. About the Role

The successful candidate will teach English across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5, delivering engaging and intellectually challenging lessons that inspire students to develop a deep appreciation of literature and language.

Students follow a rich curriculum that includes Shakespeare, modern and classic prose, poetry, drama, creative writing, and linguistic analysis. You will prepare students for GCSE and A-Level English Literature and English Language examinations while developing their analytical skills, creativity, and confidence as communicators.

You will also contribute to the wider life of the department through reading programmes, debating, creative writing, theatre visits, literary events, and enrichment opportunities that extend students’ learning beyond the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach English across KS3, KS4, and KS5

  • Deliver engaging, challenging, and well-structured lessons

  • Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language examinations

  • Develop students’ reading, writing, analytical, and communication skills

  • Assess progress and provide high-quality, constructive feedback

  • Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development

  • Support literacy initiatives and English enrichment activities

  • Encourage creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of English

Candidate Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Experience teaching English at secondary level

  • Ability to teach KS3 and KS4 confidently

  • Strong subject knowledge in English Literature and Language

  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience teaching A-Level English Literature and/or English Language

  • Experience leading literacy, debating, or creative writing initiatives

  • Ability to inspire high-achieving students through challenging texts

  • A proven track record of delivering excellent student outcomes
