The Opportunity

Shrewsbury is a historic market town famed as the birthplace of Charles Darwin, deeply rooted in the history of scientific observation, critical analysis, and natural discovery. We are seeking an intellectually curious, ambitious Science Teacher with a Teaching & Learning Responsibility (TLR) to join a progressive academy. This role is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced practitioner to deliver high-challenge instruction while stepping into a pivotal leadership position, shaping curriculum design or driving key stage performance across a dynamic faculty.

The Academy

The academy is an ambitious, forward-thinking secondary school dedicated to achieving exceptional academic and personal outcomes for all students across Shropshire. Characterized by its calm, purposeful atmosphere and strong community values, the school implements highly structured, consistent behavioural routines. This ensures that classrooms remain quiet and respectful spaces where teachers have the complete authority and support required to deliver high-impact instruction, allowing you as a middle leader to focus your energy on elevating pedagogical standards.

The Department & Leadership Culture

You will join a highly collaborative, successful, and expanding Science faculty where the subject is celebrated for its academic standards and practical engagement. The department features modern, purpose-built laboratory suites equipped with up-to-date data-logging tech, chemical apparatus, and biological models. An exceptionally organized and experienced technician team supports the faculty, ensuring all required practicals and complex demonstrations are set up flawlessly. As a TLR holder, you will work closely with the Head of Faculty, commanding the autonomy to review schemes of work, mentor early career teachers, and spearhead data-driven intervention strategies.

Core Responsibilities

  • Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge Science lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with potential opportunities to teach your subject specialty at Key Stage 5 (A-Level) for suitably qualified candidates.
  • TLR Area of Responsibility: Leading on a designated strategic area within the faculty (e.g., Key Stage 3 Curriculum Design, Lead Internal Moderator, or Coordinator for a Specific Science Discipline), driving student attainment and tracking data trends.
  • Pedagogical Mentorship: Coaching and supporting colleagues within the department, sharing evidence-based teaching practices, and conducting supportive peer-reviews to elevate whole-faculty delivery.
  • Empirical Leadership: Leading safe, organized, and impactful laboratory practicals while ensuring strict adherence to health and safety regulations across your area of responsibility.
  • Data-Driven Success: Utilizing the department’s detailed assessment tracking systems to identify learning gaps early, designing targeted interventions to maximize GCSE exam success.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for a dedicated educator and an aspiring or established middle leader who is passionate about cultivating logical clarity, evidence-based thinking, and professional excellence. Requirements include:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in a relevant scientific discipline (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).
  • Proven Leadership Potential: Experience or a demonstrated readiness to take on a position of responsibility, backed by a track record of securing excellent progress outcomes at Key Stage 4.
  • Pedagogical Expertise: A sophisticated understanding of examination board specifications, cognitive load theory, and structured retrieval practice.
  • Collaborative Presence: An articulate communicator who can motivate a team, build shared resource banks, and positively influence departmental culture.

Why Join Our Faculty?

  • A formal TLR allocation providing a competitive financial supplement and a clear, structured stepping stone toward senior leadership.
  • Unrivalled professional development pathways, including fully funded National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) tailored to middle and senior management.
  • The exceptional lifestyle benefits of Shrewsbury—a beautiful, historic loop-of-the-Severn town offering an outstanding quality of life, excellent schools, and immediate access to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
  • A supportive, collaborative professional community that genuinely values staff well-being and implements a sustainable approach to teacher workload.
