Wayman Education is seeking an innovative and enthusiastic Design Technology Teacher to join a dynamic and exceptionally well-equipped department at a highly regarded secondary school in Sawbridgeworth. This full-time, permanent position is scheduled to start in September 2026 and is open to both experienced practitioners and ambitious Early Career Teachers (ECTs). The school is renowned for its supportive leadership, strong community links, and excellent commitment to STEM and creative subjects. The design and technology faculty boasts modern workshop facilities, up-to-date CAD/CAM machinery, and dedicated technician support, providing an ideal environment to inspire the next generation of engineers, designers, and creators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, engaging design technology lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (experience teaching specialisms such as resistant materials, product design, graphics, or textiles up to Key Stage 5 is highly advantageous).
  • Foster a safe, creative, and structured learning environment that encourages students to confidently design, prototype, and evaluate their own practical projects.
  • Maintain impeccable health and safety standards in the workshops and classrooms, ensuring all machinery and hand tools are used correctly and responsibly by students.
  • Assess, track, and report on the academic progress and practical attainment of pupils in line with GCSE exam board specifications and school grading systems.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the department by assisting with display areas, material preparation, and extracurricular design or STEM clubs.

Requirements

  • Qualifications: Must hold QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or QTLS, alongside a degree in Design and Technology, Product Design, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience: A proven track record of teaching design technology within a UK secondary school setting (including successful ITT/PGCE placements).
  • Skills: Strong subject knowledge across a variety of material areas, excellent classroom management techniques, and a sound understanding of workshop health and safety protocols.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
