CORE PURPOSE

We require an intellectually vibrant, academically rigorous Sociology Teacher to deliver exceptional social sciences tuition across Key Stage 5 (A-Level). Operating within a specialized, pre-university Sixth Form environment, the successful candidate will challenge pupils to critically evaluate contemporary structural systems, demographic patterns, and sociological paradigms—focusing heavily on the sociology of education, crime and deviance, belief systems, and advanced research methodologies—to secure top-tier high-grade metrics and prepare students for competitive university pathways.

THE SCHOOL

Our Sixth Form College operates as a dedicated, academic stepping-stone between secondary school and higher education, catering exclusively to students aged 16–19. The campus functions with a distinctively mature, collegiate atmosphere where pupils are treated as young adults, taking active responsibility for their independent study hours. Free from the scheduling conflicts and behavioral management challenges of a traditional secondary campus, the college fosters an environment centered entirely on specialized advanced study, intellectual debate, and academic ambition.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Advanced Key Stage 5 Instruction: Plan and execute conceptually demanding sociology seminars, embedding complex theoretical perspectives—including Marxism, functionalism, feminism, and postmodernism—into daily lesson structures.

  • Evaluative Essay Mastery: Systematically train cohorts in the mechanics of high-scoring sociological writing, focusing explicitly on building sustained evaluation, applying contemporary case studies, and breaking down multi-mark assessment objectives.

  • Research Methodology Practice: Guide students through the practicalities of sociological research, fostering a deep, critical understanding of quantitative and qualitative methods, ethical constraints, and theoretical triangulation.

  • Higher Education Mentorship: Act as a specialist academic mentor, supervising Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) in relevant social sciences and providing expert guidance for UCAS applications, personal statements, and humanities pathways.

  • Targeted Progress Interventions: Implement rigorous, data-driven diagnostic tracking, using regular mock assessments to pinpoint gaps in structural knowledge and deploying immediate, targeted essay-writing interventions.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), or a recognized equivalent Post-16 teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in Sociology, Criminology, Social Policy, or a closely related discipline.

  • Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver exceptional progress metrics and high-grade attainment in terminal A-Level Sociology specifications.

  • Linguistic & Analytical Precision: The ability to cultivate advanced literacy and analytical skills in students, moving them confidently from descriptive writing to sophisticated, synoptic sociological critique.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Coastal Dynamics & Urban Socio-Economics: Situated in the densely populated island city of Portsmouth, the college sits within a unique coastal landscape shaped by rich naval heritage, maritime industry, and significant urban regeneration. This vibrant local setting provides a tangible, living laboratory for studying shifting social stratification, localized demographic trends, and contemporary urban sociology.

  • Connectivity & Infrastructure: The campus benefits from excellent South Coast transport infrastructure, allowing for straightforward road commuting via the M27, A27, and A3(M) corridors. Public transit links are exceptional; the college is served by dense local bus networks and sits within easy reach of Portsmouth’s major rail hubs, including Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour stations, which offer direct, frequent Southern, South Western Railway, and Great Western Railway services across Hampshire, West Sussex, and straight to London Waterloo.
