A vibrant secondary academy in Plymouth is seeking an inspiring Teacher of Sociology to join its Social Sciences faculty for an immediate (ASAP) start. This is an exceptional opportunity for a practitioner passionate about social theory, research methods, and fostering critical societal analysis in young people.
Sociology plays a prominent role in this school’s academic identity across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. The successful applicant will deliver engaging Sociology lessons across Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Sociology).
Working closely with the Social Sciences department, you will guide pupils through core topics including education, crime and deviance, families and households, beliefs in society, and social stratification, while developing student research literacy. This is a full-time, ongoing or permanent role.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach engaging theoretical and empirical Sociology lessons across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5
- Lead co-curricular debate clubs, social research groups, and guest speaker seminars
- Guide GCSE and A-Level pupils through research methodology critique, theoretical evaluation, and essay structure
- Utilize contemporary media archives, sociological case studies, and digital learning suites
- Assess, track, and report on student progress across analytical essays and formal examinations
- Fulfill pastoral duties as a Form Tutor, supporting student wellbeing and personal development

Candidate Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or recognized UK teaching credentials (PGCE / SCITT / QTLS)
- Honors degree in Sociology, Social Policy, or a closely related social science discipline
- Proven track record (or clear potential during training) for delivering strong GCSE/A-Level Sociology outcomes
- Deep knowledge of sociological theories (Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism, Postmodernism) and exam board specifications
- An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
