Salary: Dependent on experience
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

About the School

A highly regarded secondary school in Oxford is looking for an experienced Science Technician to join its established science department.

The school has a strong focus on practical science and provides pupils with regular opportunities to develop their understanding through experiments and laboratory work. The science department is well resourced and works closely together to ensure practical lessons are prepared to a high standard.

The successful candidate will become an important part of the department, working alongside teaching staff and helping ensure laboratories, equipment and practical resources are ready for lessons.

About the Role

The Science Technician will provide practical and technical support across the science department.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing equipment, chemicals and materials for practical lessons.

  • Setting up experiments and demonstrations before lessons.

  • Supporting teachers during practical activities.

  • Preparing Biology, Chemistry and Physics resources.

  • Maintaining and checking laboratory equipment.

  • Keeping laboratories, preparation rooms and storage areas organised.

  • Monitoring stock levels and identifying when resources need replenishing.

  • Ensuring chemicals and equipment are stored safely.

  • Following COSHH, risk assessment and health and safety procedures.

  • Cleaning and maintaining practical equipment.

  • Reporting damaged or faulty equipment.

  • Supporting practical examinations where required.

  • Ensuring laboratory waste is disposed of safely.

  • Working closely with teaching staff to prepare resources around the school's timetable.

The Ideal Candidate

Previous experience working as a Science Technician within a school or college is essential.

The school is looking for someone who already understands the demands of a busy secondary science department rather than someone with purely laboratory-based experience.

You should have:

  • Recent school or college Science Technician experience.

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory health and safety.

  • Experience preparing practical science lessons.

  • Confidence handling scientific equipment and chemicals.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a department.

  • A proactive approach to preparing resources in advance.

A relevant science qualification would be advantageous.

An enhanced DBS will be required.
