Data Manager - Independent Secondary School - Norwich

Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Dependent on experience

Data Manager

Are you an analytical, highly organised and detail-focused data professional looking for a permanent opportunity within an established school? An Independent Secondary School in Norwich is seeking an experienced Data Manager to take responsibility for the accurate management, maintenance and reporting of key student and school data.

This is a central operational role supporting senior leaders, teachers, pastoral teams and administrative colleagues. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the school's information is accurate, accessible and presented in a way that allows staff to make informed decisions.

You will manage student information across the school's management information systems, ensuring records are updated accurately and that key changes are processed promptly.

The role will involve working with a wide range of information, including student demographics, attendance, assessment data, timetabling information, examination entries and other school-related records.

You will be expected to produce regular reports for senior leaders and departments, helping colleagues understand student performance, attendance and other relevant trends.

Accuracy will be absolutely essential. The successful candidate will need to have a methodical approach to checking information and identifying inconsistencies before reports or data are shared.

You will also support the school's assessment and reporting cycles. This may involve coordinating the collection of assessment information from teaching staff, checking submissions, preparing reports and ensuring information is available to senior leaders when required.

The role will become particularly busy around key points in the academic year, including the start of term, assessment periods, reporting deadlines and examination entries. Strong planning and time management will therefore be important.

Data Manager - School Information

The School is an established Independent Secondary School in Norwich with high expectations for academic achievement, student development and professional standards.

The school provides a supportive environment where students are encouraged to become independent, confident and responsible learners.

Alongside academic study, students benefit from extracurricular activities, enrichment opportunities and strong pastoral support.

Senior leaders place importance on using accurate information to understand student progress and make informed decisions. The Data Manager will therefore work closely with senior leadership, curriculum leaders, pastoral staff, examinations colleagues and the wider administration team.

The school values accurate reporting and effective communication. You will be expected to explain data clearly and ensure colleagues understand the information being presented rather than simply producing spreadsheets and reports.

Data Manager - Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take responsibility for:

  • Maintaining accurate student records

  • Managing the school's management information system

  • Updating student information promptly

  • Producing regular data reports

  • Supporting senior leaders with data analysis

  • Preparing attendance reports

  • Supporting assessment and reporting cycles

  • Coordinating the collection of assessment information

  • Checking data submitted by departments

  • Identifying missing or inconsistent information

  • Supporting examination data processes

  • Assisting with examination entries where required

  • Maintaining accurate student demographic information

  • Supporting timetable-related data administration

  • Producing reports for curriculum and pastoral teams

  • Preparing information for meetings

  • Supporting school census and statutory returns

  • Maintaining appropriate data documentation

  • Ensuring information is handled confidentially

  • Responding to data requests from authorised staff

  • Supporting the development of efficient data processes

  • Maintaining appropriate filing and record-keeping systems

You will need to ensure that deadlines are carefully monitored and that important data returns and reports are completed accurately and on time.

Data Management and Reporting

A key part of the position will be transforming raw information into useful reports.

Senior leaders and teachers need clear information that allows them to understand student progress, attendance and other important trends. You will therefore need to present information in a clear and accessible format.

You may be asked to compare information across year groups, subjects or student groups and identify areas requiring further investigation.

The successful candidate will not necessarily need to be an advanced statistician, but you should be confident working with spreadsheets, tables and large amounts of information.

Strong Excel skills will be particularly useful, including confidence with formulas, sorting, filtering and presenting information clearly.

Experience with school MIS platforms and assessment systems will be advantageous.

Supporting Assessment

The Data Manager will play an important role during assessment and reporting periods.

You may coordinate deadlines with teaching departments, monitor the submission of assessment information and check data for obvious errors or inconsistencies.

You will then help prepare the information required for reports, meetings and internal analysis.

The ability to communicate professionally with teaching staff will be important. You may occasionally need to follow up missing information or ask colleagues to clarify entries, so confidence and diplomacy will be required.

Data Manager - Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience in data management or school administration

  • Experience working within a secondary school desirable

  • Strong Excel and spreadsheet skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Experience working with large datasets

  • Strong organisational skills

  • Ability to meet strict deadlines

  • Experience using a school MIS desirable

  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to produce clear reports

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to collaborate with teaching and support teams

  • Professional and methodical approach

Experience with systems such as SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom, iSAMS or similar school management platforms would be advantageous, although experience with one system should provide a good foundation for learning another.

Working Environment

The Data Manager will be an important member of the school's administrative and operational structure.

You will work with senior leaders, teachers, examinations staff, pastoral teams and administrators, meaning the role offers plenty of variety and opportunities to understand how different areas of a school operate.

The successful candidate should enjoy working with information but also understand that data ultimately exists to support students and staff.

You will need to be someone who checks their work carefully, keeps deadlines under control and is comfortable taking responsibility for important information.

This is a particularly good opportunity for an experienced school administrator, data officer or MIS professional looking to progress into a permanent Data Manager position.

Salary

The salary for this Data Manager position will be dependent on experience.
