The Opportunity

Newcastle upon Tyne is a historic city of industrial innovation—from its rich heritage in heavy engineering and shipbuilding to its modern status as a leading UK hub for subsea engineering, digital tech, and clean energy research. We are seeking an analytically minded, rigorous Mathematics Teacher to join a pioneering University Technical College (UTC). In this role, you will challenge students to master abstract mathematical theory, complex calculus, and statistical modelling, directly linking the classroom to the city’s thriving technical, scientific, and engineering sectors.

The School

Operating as a University Technical College (UTC), our institution specializes in delivering high-quality technical and scientific education for students aged 14 to 19. Sponsored by leading regional universities and high-profile industrial employers, we offer a professional, workplace-simulated learning environment. Our students have actively chosen a specialized STEM pathway, resulting in a highly motivated student body where behavioural issues are virtually non-existent. This orderly, professional atmosphere allows our faculty to focus 100% of their energy on high-level subject delivery, engineering mathematics, and academic mentoring.

The Department & Quantitative Culture

You will join a highly successful, collaborative Mathematics faculty that prioritizes deep conceptual mastery alongside exceptional examination success. The department utilizes university-style seminar spaces and computer suites equipped with advanced statistical, graphing, and mathematical modelling software. Our curriculum moves away from rote memorization, focusing instead on structural mathematical derivation and its practical application to mechanical engineering, physics, and computer science. We maintain direct, weekly links with our corporate partners, providing unique opportunities to integrate real-world industrial data and structural problems into our daily lessons.

Core Responsibilities

  • High-Challenge STEM Instruction: Planning and delivering rigorous Mathematics lessons across Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and potentially Key Stage 5 (A-Level / Core Maths), ensuring top-tier academic progress.
  • Mathematical Modelling & Reasoning: Training students to construct, deconstruct, and interpret complex mathematical proofs, algebraic structures, and statistical data.
  • Contextual Engineering Mathematics: Collaborating with the engineering and computing faculties to explicitly align math units with advanced technical briefs and robotics coding.
  • Data-Driven Progression: Utilizing granular diagnostic tracking to identify learning gaps early, providing precise, actionable feedback ahead of terminal examinations.
  • Academic Mentorship: Acting as a professional mentor to a cohort of students, supporting their academic progress, university applications, and higher-level apprenticeship goals.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for an ambitious subject specialist who is passionate about the logical purity of mathematics and possesses the pedagogical skill to stretch analytically minded young people. Your profile should include:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS, or a recognized post-16 teaching qualification, alongside a strong honours degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
  • Track Record of Examination Success: Proven experience or clear capacity to secure excellent progress outcomes in terminal mathematics examinations.
  • Professional Demeanour: The ability to command a mature classroom through exceptional subject expertise, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and high intellectual curiosity.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A proactive practitioner who enjoys sharing resources, co-planning cross-curricular projects, and contributing to the technical ethos of the college.

Why Join Our Faculty?

  • The unique professional satisfaction of teaching in a highly specialized STEM environment with mature student relationships and smaller seminar sizes.
  • Comprehensive, industry-linked professional development focusing on advanced mathematical pedagogy, data science applications, and pathways into middle leadership.
  • The unmatched lifestyle benefits of Newcastle—a vibrant, culturally rich northern city offering a low cost of living, famous hospitality, stunning architecture, and immediate access to Northumberland’s beautiful coastline.
  • A supportive, forward-thinking leadership team that respects teacher autonomy, utilizes centralized administrative support, and maintains a strict, sustainable approach to workload.
