The Opportunity

Are you a practical, "can-do" professional who takes pride in maintaining a safe and inspiring environment for young people? Can you be the reliable backbone of a school site in a town defined by its resilient community and industrious spirit? We are seeking a versatile and proactive School Caretaker to join a committed facilities team in Mansfield. Located on the edge of the historic Sherwood Forest and boasting a proud heritage in coal and textiles, Mansfield is a town that values hard work and local pride. We are looking for an individual who can balance the rigour of site security with the technical demands of building maintenance, ensuring the school remains a first-class facility for students and staff alike.

Core Responsibilities

  • Site Security & Access: Managing the daily opening and closing of the school gates and buildings, including the arming/disarming of alarm systems and acting as a primary keyholder for emergency call-outs.
  • Maintenance & Handyman Duties: Carrying out essential repairs across the site—including basic plumbing, carpentry, redecoration, and glazing—to ensure the learning environment is always at its best.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Executing critical safety checks, including weekly fire alarm testing, emergency lighting inspections, and rigorous water temperature monitoring for Legionella prevention.
  • Grounds Stewardship: Maintaining the school's external appearance, including litter management, basic landscaping, and ensuring all pathways are safe and gritted during the winter months.
  • Contractor Coordination: Escorting and supervising external tradespeople (electricians, heating engineers, etc.), ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with school risk assessments.
  • Porterage & Setup: Managing the physical setup for school life—from moving exam desks and staging for performances to coordinating the delivery and distribution of heavy supplies.

Why This School?

  • Mansfield’s Community Heart: Work in a school that is deeply embedded in its local neighbourhood, providing a rewarding sense of belonging and a visible impact on the community.
  • Autonomy & Responsibility: Enjoy a role that offers a high degree of independence, where your mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills are respected and relied upon daily.
  • Active & Varied Work: Trade the desk for a dynamic environment where no two days are the same, covering everything from building management systems to traditional trade skills.
  • Professional Growth: Access to specialist training in IOSH Managing Safely, Asbestos Awareness, and Manual Handling, with clear pathways toward Site Manager or Facilities Lead roles.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience: Proven experience in a caretaking, site maintenance, or a professional trade (e.g., construction, plumbing, or DIY) is essential.
  • Technical Skills: A broad "handyman" skillset and a solid understanding of health and safety regulations within a public building.
  • Reliability: A highly dependable individual who understands the critical nature of punctuality for school openings and the importance of site vigilance.
  • Character: A proactive, resilient, and friendly professional who can interact positively with students and staff while maintaining the highest standards of site safety.
