About the School

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and engaging Behavior Mentor to join an inclusive and supportive secondary school in Manchester. The school is committed to providing every student with the guidance, structure, and encouragement needed to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

This is a key pastoral role working closely with the SENCO, Heads of Year, and Pastoral Support Team to mentor pupils displaying challenging behavior, social-emotional needs, or low engagement in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1:1 & Small Group Mentoring: Provide targeted 1:1 and small group mentoring sessions to help pupils regulate emotions, build self-esteem, and develop positive behavioral strategies.

  • Classroom Support: Offer proactive support within the classroom to de-escalate challenging behaviors, re-engage pupils in set tasks, and minimize classroom disruptions.

  • Behavior Intervention Plans: Work alongside the SENCO and Pastoral Team to implement and monitor individual behavior plans (IBPs) and tracking targets.

  • Parent & Staff Liaison: Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, guardians, and external support services to ensure a consistent approach to each pupil’s well-being and progress.

  • Role Modeling: Act as a positive, grounded, and trusted role model, encouraging attendance, punctuality, and respect across the school community.

Requirements

  • Experience: Proven experience working with children or young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, challenging behavior, or SEN (e.g., in secondary schools, alternative provision, youth work, or sports coaching).

  • Skills: Strong de-escalation techniques, high emotional intelligence, active listening skills, and outstanding behavior management ability.

  • Personal Qualities: Resilience, patience, empathy, confidence, and the ability to build rapport quickly with hard-to-reach young people.

  • Safeguarding: An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or readiness to undergo a full DBS application immediately).

What the School Offers

  • A warm, collaborative pastoral team and supportive Senior Leadership Team.

  • Onboarding, safeguarding, and ongoing professional development (including de-escalation/Team-Teach training opportunities).

  • Excellent transport links across Greater Manchester and on-site parking.
