The Opportunity
Hammersmith is a prestigious and fast-evolving district of West London, characterized by its mix of historic architecture and modern commercial development. We are seeking a highly competent and organized Estates Officer to join a leading secondary academy. In this role, you will provide critical support to the Premises Manager, ensuring that the school’s physical assets are managed efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with statutory educational standards.
The Role & Department
You will be a key member of the Estates and Facilities team, helping to oversee a complex secondary campus that requires constant monitoring and high-level maintenance. This role bridges the gap between hands-on site management and administrative compliance, requiring someone who can move seamlessly from the plant room to the office. You will work in a professional environment that demands high standards of presentation and a proactive approach to facility modernization. The academy offers a collaborative atmosphere where the Estates team is integrated into the wider school operations to support student achievement.
Core Responsibilities
- Statutory Compliance: Managing the school’s compliance calendar, ensuring that all inspections for fire safety, gas, electricity, and water hygiene (Legionella) are carried out by certified professionals and documented accurately.
- Contract Management: Liaising with and monitoring the performance of external contractors, including cleaning, catering, and grounds maintenance, ensuring they deliver value for money and adhere to safeguarding protocols.
- Helpdesk Coordination: Managing the internal estates helpdesk, prioritizing maintenance requests from staff, and coordinating the site team to resolve issues with minimal disruption to teaching and learning.
- Health & Safety Oversight: Conducting regular site audits and risk assessments, ensuring that the academy remains a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors in accordance with HSE and KCSiE guidelines.
- Project Support: Assisting the Premises Manager in the planning and execution of capital works and refurbishment projects, including the procurement of materials and the supervision of onsite works.
The Successful Candidate
We are looking for an estates professional who is as comfortable with a spreadsheet as they are with a site inspection. Requirements include:
- Experience: Proven experience in facilities management, estates coordination, or a senior site role, ideally within a large-scale public sector or educational setting.
- Knowledge Base: A strong working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and building regulations; IOSH or NEBOSH certification is highly desirable.
- Technical Literacy: Proficiency in using facilities management software (CAFM) and the Microsoft Office Suite to track assets and manage budgets.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage external stakeholders and communicate effectively with the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
Why Join Us?
- A vital role with a high degree of variety and the opportunity to influence the physical development of a London academy.
- Access to ongoing professional development in estates management, procurement, and advanced health and safety.
- The opportunity to work in Hammersmith, an exceptionally well-connected area with world-class amenities and a thriving professional network.
- A stable, year-round position within a team that values innovation and high standards of site care.
