An Outstanding School in the London Borough of Islington is looking to appoint a dedicated and experienced Attendance Officer to join its pastoral and safeguarding team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who understands the importance of regular attendance and enjoys working directly with students and families to overcome barriers to learning.

Attendance is closely linked to student achievement, wellbeing and safeguarding, and the successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring that attendance is monitored carefully and that concerns are acted upon promptly.

You will work closely with Heads of Year, pastoral leaders, safeguarding colleagues and parents to identify patterns of absence, follow up unexplained absences and put appropriate support in place. The role requires someone who can combine professionalism and persistence with a genuinely supportive approach when working with families.

Attendance Team

The Attendance Team works across the school to monitor attendance and punctuality, identify students who may require additional support and maintain clear communication with families.

The successful candidate will be confident using attendance systems and analysing attendance information to identify trends. You will also need to be comfortable having sometimes challenging conversations with parents while maintaining a professional and constructive approach.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring daily attendance and punctuality.

  • Following up unexplained absences.

  • Contacting parents and carers regarding attendance concerns.

  • Maintaining accurate attendance records.

  • Identifying persistent absence and emerging patterns.

  • Producing attendance reports for senior leaders.

  • Working with Heads of Year and pastoral staff.

  • Supporting attendance intervention plans.

  • Arranging and contributing to attendance meetings.

  • Liaising with external attendance services when appropriate.

  • Maintaining detailed records of interventions.

  • Supporting safeguarding processes.

  • Monitoring students returning from extended absence.

  • Promoting positive attendance across the school.

  • Preparing attendance information for meetings and reviews.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in school attendance, pastoral administration or a related role.

  • Strong understanding of attendance procedures.

  • Experience using school MIS or attendance systems.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Confidence speaking with parents and carers.

  • Strong organisational skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.

  • Good IT skills.

  • Ability to work calmly under pressure.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and student welfare.
