The Department & Literary Culture

You will join a high-performing English faculty where the study of literature is treated as a vital exploration of the human condition. The department follows a knowledge-rich curriculum that spans the canon, from the complexities of Shakespearean tragedy to the sharp relevance of contemporary post-colonial voices. As an 'Outstanding' setting, we prioritize 'the disciplinary literacy' approach, ensuring students master the sophisticated vocabulary and critical frameworks required for elite academic success. We maintain active links with the Everyman & Playhouse Theatres and local university literature departments, providing students with enriched opportunities for performance and workshops.

Core Responsibilities

• Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge English Language and Literature lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with opportunities for A-Level instruction for suitably qualified candidates.
• Textual Analysis: Guiding students through the rigorous interrogation of prose, poetry, and drama, fostering the ability to synthesize complex themes and authorial intent.
• Writing Mastery: Training students in the art of rhetoric and creative expression, ensuring they can produce high-quality analytical essays and compelling original narratives.
• Data-Driven Progress: Utilizing the academy’s sophisticated feedback systems to provide granular guidance, ensuring students exceed their targets in both terminal exams and internal assessments.
• Oracy Leadership: Promoting a culture of debate and public speaking, helping students develop the confidence to articulate their ideas with clarity and conviction.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for a subject specialist who believes in the transformative power of the written word. Requirements include:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in English Literature or a closely related discipline.
• Proven Track Record: Evidence of delivering exceptional learning outcomes at GCSE, with a deep understanding of AQA or Edexcel assessment objectives.
• Instructional Clarity: The ability to demystify complex structural and linguistic devices for students of all abilities.
